Greyhounds sweep Bulldogs

NEW ULM — New Ulm Cathedral continued its winning ways as the Greyhounds swept Lester Prairie 25-11, 25-13, 25-10 on Monday in a nonconference volleyball match.

Both teams entered the match with opposite 9-0 streaks. Cathedral had won nine matches in a row, while Lester Prairie had lost nine consecutive matches.

The Greyhounds led for a majority of the first set. Lester Prairie held a brief, but early lead before Cathedral asserted itself and it pulled away from the Bulldogs.

Late in the first set, Lily Brennan bumped the ball to Annie Edwards, who set up Sydnee Helget for a kill which gave Cathedral a 17-8 lead. Megan Haala got back-to-back ace serves for a 20-8 Greyhound advantage. A Lester Prairie player knocked the ball out of bounds for the set point.

The Bulldogs briefly gave the Greyhounds fits early in the second set by keeping things close. Helget bumped the ball to Edwards who set up Megan Haala for a kill. That play gave an 8-7 lead. Jenna Hotovec tacked on back-to-back ace serves which made it 10-7 for Cathedral.

A few plays later, Hotovec got another kill. Kiah Helget got a block and a tip on the next play for a 21-11 Greyhound lead. Edwards’ set to Megan Haala for another kill, which made it 23-11. Edwards set the ball up for Hotovec, who tipped the ball over the net for a 24-11 lead. Brennan bumped the ball to Edwards, who set up Hotovec for a kill which was the set point.

The Bulldogs grabbed an early lead to open the third set. Brennan regained the Cathedral lead on a soft tip. On the next play, Brennan got an ace serve which made it 4-2 Cathedral.

Edwards set the ball for Helget, who returned the ball for a 9-2 Cathedral lead. Lester Prairie made back-to-back errors which added 2 points to the Greyhound lead, 11-2.

Hotovec started another point run for Cathedral when she blocked the ball and she tipped it over the net. Alex Hornick bumped the ball to Edwards, who set up Megan Haala for a kill. On the next play, Edwards set up Hotovec for another kill. That made it 17-9 Cathedral.

Brennan got a block, which made it 24-10. Hotovec served the ball. One Bulldog hit the ball, but a second player was unable to return the ball and that gave the Greyhounds the set and match point.

Megan Haala had 10 kills and nine digs, while Hotovec added 10 digs and nine kills. Sydnee Helget had 10 kills, Brennan added 14 digs and five ace serves and Edwards had 34 set assists and three kills.

Cathedral (17-4, 5-1) will play at Cedar Mountain (19-7, 6-1) on Tuesday.
