NEW ULM — RBI singles from Kyan Kube and Blake Sexton in the bottom of the sixth inning broke an 8-8 tie and Connor Bode struck out the side in the top of the seventh as Minnesota Valley Lutheran downed Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther 10-8 in a nonconference baseball game at Johnson Park.
Connor Bode — the third pitcher used by the Chargers in the game — got the win as MVL evened their season mark at 3-3.
Landon Schneider took the loss for the Jaguars.
Rogan Scriver had two hits for the Chargers who out-hit the Jaguars 8-6 in the game.
Chargers head coach Micah Degner said that the win was not pretty.
“But we got in the win column and we got to .500 and that was our goal,” he said. “We talked about that at the end of last week — get back to .500. We have three more games this week — chance to get some more wins.”
The Chargers, who host Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial Tuesday at 5 p.m., gave up two early unearned runs in the first inning before cutting the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the inning on a Kube groundout.
GHEC/T/ML plated three runs in the top of the third before the Chargers put a crooked number on the scoreboard with five runs. An Aiden Weisensel RBI double, a Sexton single and two errors had the Chargers leading 6-5.
Grayson Bode’s leadoff single eventually resulted in him scoring on a wild pitch for a 7-6 lead, and doubles from Scriver and Noah Merseth had the Chargers ahead 8-6 in the fifth.
But the Jaguars knotted the game with two runs in the top of the sixth before MVL scored twice in the bottom of the inning.
“We made too many mistakes today,” Degner said. “But honestly we have played better and lost games, but we battled and found a way to win.”
