NEW ULM — One big play, one turnover.
Martin County West used an 82-yard scoring run late in the third quarter and a Minnesota Valley Lutheran turnover on the Chargers’ next offensive possession to add a second touchdown and come away with a hard-fought 13-6 win Friday night in a Southwest District football game.
Bradyn Kube scored the lone touchdown for the Chargers on an 18-yard scoring strike from quarterback Cole Thompson in the second quarter.
Zach Anderson scored on an 82-yard run, with Jamesson Forsberg scoring the insurance touchdown on a 3-yard run with just under six minutes to play in the game.
For the Chargers and head coach Jim Buboltz, the loss was a little disappointing.
“I thought that we left some points out there in the first half and did not take advantage of all of our opportunities tonight,” he said as the Chargers fell to 2-1 on the season. “I thought that in the first half, we played well enough to put more points on the board than 6.
“This was a battle — it was a good football game by both teams. Everybody put it out there.”
After a scoreless quarter, it was the Chargers, who play next Saturday at 3 p.m. at Wabasso, got on the board first when Kyler Flunker intercepted a pass at the Mavericks’ 37-yard line.
Five plays later, Thompson found Kube for an 18-yard touchdown pass at the 9:28 mark.
That score held up until late in the third quarter.
MVL pinned the Mavericks deep in their territory.
Facing a second and 2 from their own 18-yard line, Mavericks’ quarterback Zach Anderson kept the ball and scooted around right end, turned up the field and raced 82 yards for the touchdown.
“He (Anderson) ran right into a blitz and ran right by it,” Buboltz said. “We blitzed off of the corner and he just turned it up inside the blitz. Like we say — you make a call, they make a call and it is the exact call to go against you.”
MCW then started their game-winning drive when Ryan Cutler intercepted a Thompson pass early in the fourth quarter.
Twelve plays after the pick, Forsberg carried the ball in from 3 yards out.
The Mavericks then sealed the game on a second Cutler interception with 2:04 left in the game.
“This was a battle,” Buboltz said. “It was a good football game. Everybody put it out there.
“We have a good football team and we are going to be in this for a while. I am proud of the guys.”
