Sleepy Eye downs Springfield in sub-state semifinals
ST. JAMES – The Sleepy Eye Legion Post 7 baseball team ran past Springfield Post 257 by a score of 12-4 on Saturday in the Senior Legion DII Southwest Sub-State Baseball Tournament Semifinals.
While Springfield scored first for two runs in the bottom of the first, Sleepy Eye scored 12 unanswered to run away with the win. Sleepy Eye had 15 hits to Springfield’s seven. Sleepy Eye also kept its errors to a minimum by committing one to Springfield’s six.
Tyler Mathiowetz led Sleepy Eye at the plate, going 3 for 4 with a double and three runs scored, while Merrick Mathiowetz was 2 for 4 with two doubles, three RBIs and three runs scored and Ethan Schwartz was 2 for 3 with two RBIs.
Kayden Klein got the complete-game win, allowing seven hits and no walks for four earned runs while striking out two.
Adiel Trevino was 1 for 3 with a double and two RBIs to lead Springfield, while Brayden Trapp was 1 for 1 with two RBIs. Trevino took the mound loss in 3 2/3 innings, allowing nine hits and two walks for seven runs, five earned, while striking out three.
Sleepy Eye will now await the winner of the elimination bracket for a finals game on Saturday in St. James. Sleepy Eye needs just one win to advance to the state tournament, while the elimination bracket winner will need to beat Sleepy Eye twice on Saturday to advance to state.
The winner of a 5 p.m. Friday game between St. James-Luverne will move on to play Springfield in a 7:30 p.m. elimination bracket finals game Friday night.
