MARSHALL — No matter what Cedar Mountain tried to do, Renville County West’s Jasen Jansen was there to spoil the fun.
Renville County West ended fourth-seeded Cedar Mountain’s run through the Section 2, 9-man football playoffs with a 47-18 victory at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall.
The loss ends Cedar Mountain’s season at 6-5. RCW, the No. 2 seed, improves to 8-3 and will play the winner of Mountain Lake Area and Hills-Beaver Creek at 7 p.m. next Friday at SMSU.
The loss ended an impressive playoff run by the Cougars, who had upset No. 1 seed Hancock last Saturday in the semifinals.
Jansen, just a sophomore, had five total touchdowns. He had three rushing touchdowns and a receiving touchdown for the Jaguars. Jansen also picked off two passes and ran one of them back 62 yards for the touchdown, and he later recovered a fumble. And that was all in the first half. He finished with 28 carries for 186 yards.
The Cougars got an 81-yard touchdown run by Caden Kleinschmidt on a fake punt on 4th-and-37. Kleinschmidt took the snap, went to the left and ran down the sideline for the score with 8:56 left in the second quarter. Nick Freitag had a rushing touchdown in the second half for the Cougars and Kleinschmidt scored a late touchdown during running time.
The Cougars had the opening drive but were intercepted by Jansen. From there, the Jaguars marched down the field with a series of handoffs before Jansen scored from the 6 to make it 7-0 after the PAT.
After the Cougars turned it over on downs, the Jaguars again scored when Jack Wertish ran it in with 1:56 left in the first quarter to make it 14-0.
After Kleinschmidt scored, the Jaguars led 14-6 until Jansen found himself wide open in the end zone. He caught a 14-yard pass to make it 20-6 and later, Jansen again found himself in the end zone, this time when he intercepted a screen pass at the 38 and took it to the end zone, squaring up and knocking over Cedar Mountain quarterback Cooper Freitag in the process.
Just for good measure, Jansen recovered a Cedar Mountain fumble on the next possession and he finished the drive with a 1-yard score with 30.8 seconds left to give the Jaguars a 34-6 lead.
Nick Freitag scored on a 12-yard touchdown in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 34-12 with 9:13 left in the third. The Jaguars responded with a rushing touchdown by Isaac Haen to go up 41-12.
Jansen scored his third rushing touchdown of the game from 3 yards out in the fourth quarter to make it 47-12.
Kleinschmidt scored his second touchdown of the game on a 69-yard touchdown reception with 1:33 left in the game.
