NEW ULM — Brock Nachreiner’s two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning — just the third hit of the game for New Ulm — erased a 3-2 Mankato East lead as the New Ulm VFW Silver defeated the Mankato American VFW 4-3 Monday evening in a VFW baseball game at Mueller Park.

Silver reliever Owen Drill ended the game with a strikeout.

Wyatt Hansen, the second of three pitchers used by New Ulm in the game, got the win.

He pitched two innings and allowed one run on two hits.

Bobby Rewitzer started for New Ulm (1-0) and permitted two runs on two hits and fanned six.

Cam Burke took the loss for the American.

Chase Wilson had the other two hits for the Silver.

“This was a group effort,” Silver head coach Josh Altmann said. “We were living on the base paths and we got that clutch hit.”

Altmann said that Rewitzer did a good job in his start.

The right-hander set down nine straight batters before he ran into a speed bump in the top of the fourth when the American scored both of their runs on a two-run triple from Tripp Brown.

The Silver took a 1-0 lead in the the bottom of the second when they scored a run without the aid of a hit.

Hansen walked and was sacrificed to second by Owen Drill.

Hansen stole third and came into score on a throwing error to third on the play.

New Ulm used the same formula to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth.

Owen Drill was hit by a pitch and went to second on an Ethan Drill sacrifice bunt.

He swiped third and raced home on another throwing error.

“We like to be aggressive on the bases,” Altmann said.

The American grabbed a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth on a fielder’s choice.

But New Ulm started its eventual game-winning rally in the bottom of the inning.

Owen Drill worked a one-out walk and took second on an Ethan Drill sacrifice bunt and stole third.

Blake Aufderheide walked and stole second.

Nachreiner then sliced a two-run single to center.

“That was a clutch hit from Brock,” Altmann said. “This is our first game and I am very happy. All of our pitchers did well (combining for nine strikeouts and five hits allowed). And I know that our hitting will come around — we just have to shorten up our swings.”
