NORTH MANKATO — For the second consecutive season, the Sleepy Eye United boys golf team will be headed to the state tournament after winning the Section 2A Boys Golf Tournament Monday at North Links Golf Course.

Nolan Kucera was the leader for the SEU boys, taking home the individual section championship after shooting a 148 across the two days of the tournament.

“It means a lot to keep playing well to get there again,” Kucera said. “It feels good.”

Kucera said his putting was his biggest strength on the day.

“I just had to believe in myself and a lot of practice,” he said. “Outside of practice I went a lot … putting was really good today. Off the tee wasn’t the best, but otherwise it was good.”

While SEU will be attending the tournament as a team, one more golfer from the area — Cedar Mountain’s Carson Schiller — will be returning to the state tournament as well.

Schiller made the state tournament in 2024 as a sophomore, but just missed out last year. Schiller is looking forward to getting another chance at state.

“It’s a huge redemption in a way,” Schiller said. “I was so young as a sophomore. When I got there, I was pretty nervous. I didn’t have the best showing, but I feel really good about my game right now, and I have some experience on the course. Getting back there gives me an opportunity to do better … It did suck missing last year, but it will make it that much better making it back this year.”

After Kucera, Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton’s Jeffery Simonson placed second (153), while United South Central’s Brennan Olson took third (154). SEU’s Isaac Christensen finished fourth (158). Alden-Conger’s Ryan Hintz and Schiller tied for fifth (160), and USC’s Kolt Bullerman, Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther’s Gavin Kester, SEU’s Blaine Arneson, Martin County West’s Knox Larson and SEU’s Anders Coulson all tied for seventh with a 165. Springfield’s Dylan Simonson and Gibbon-Fairfax-Withrop’s Cole Jacobson tied for 15th (174), and New Ulm Cathedral’s Carter Wilson placed 20th.

SEU won the team side of the meet with a 636, followed by USC (678), Mountain Lake Area (682) and Cedar Mountain (713).

The top team and the top five individuals not on that team qualified for the state tournament.

The state tournament begins on June 9 at Pebble Creek Golf Course in Becker.

Starting at $4.50/week.
