All 3 boys programs look to the future

NEW ULM — All three boys’ high school basketball teams ended their seasons last week.

The three combined for a record of 30-23 with Minnesota Valley Lutheran at 14-5, New Ulm Cathedral at 11-7 and New Ulm High School at 5-11.

All three coches looked into the future for next season.

For the MVL Chargers, next season will be a season for rebuilding and tweaking some things.

“We are going to have to see what we are going to get out of the post position,” Morgan said. “Our sophomores and freshmen or the players coming back can improve. But the inside is where I really worry about. Our perimeter players will be fine but the post spot is a question mark.”

Morgan does bring back both Cole and Luke Thompson.

“They will play a big role in what we do,” he said. “Christian Edwards will have a big role in next season along with David Santelman — those are players who got some minutes this past year. Garrett Parker got much better throughout the season.”

Morgan said that Daniel Norris “is a player who got strong inside and he did improve as the season went on.”

Morgan said that Norris could be the force inside for MVL next season.

“But we have to see what we do over the summer and how we improve in the off-season,” Morgan said. “We will play with the cards we get dealt.”

New Ulm Cathedral head coach Alan Woitas knows that the keys to the Greyhounds’ offense will be in the hands of sophomore-to-be Jevan Wilfahrt.

“He had a real nice year as a freshman,” Woitas said. “He competed on both offense and defense ends. We asked him to do a lot of different things for our team and he accepted every challenge. He put a lot of time in and he is gong to be a good player in this area for the next three years.”

The Greyhounds also return Sam Knowles along with David Wilfahrt and Justin Berg.

“Luke Mages played some minutes so we have a lot of returning players — a nice corp coming back for next year. They are excited to build off of this season and compete in the section next year.”

Woitas said that he hopes to find more consistent scoring for next season along with finding players who can stretch the floor more.

One team that could well see a big jump in win totals is New Um High School, who returns 45 of its 62 points per game average for next season.

“We are really looking forward to where we are heading,” Eagles head coach Matt Dennis said. “But it depends on the work this summer that we want to put in.”

New Um brings back guards Charlie Osborne (17.3 ppg), James Osborne (who started some games as a freshman) at 9.8 ppg, Josh Wenninger (11.3 ppg), Colton Benson (who also started some games as a freshman) at 7.1 ppg, and Zander Fischer, who averaged 2.2 points per game but who Dennis said really improved the second half of the year.

“I think that this group is going to put the work in in the off-season,” Dennis said.

Dennis said that his backcourt is returning along with two big men in Benson and Fischer.

“We are excited about not just coming back and improving on what we did this year but also building as far as the future goes,” Dennis said.

While Dennis has could run a three-guard offense, he said he could even run a four-guard offense next season.

“Looking at our size, Zander is back (at 6-foot-6) and he is our big guy with size. Colton Benson is one of those tweeners. He can keep growing but he can also handle the ball.”
