NEW ULM — New Ulm Cathedral swept Minnesota Valley Lutheran on Thursday 13-4 and 17-2 (four innings) in Tomahawk Conference softball action at MVL High School.

In Game 1, Cathedral’s Lily Brennan drew a walk with one out in the top of the first inning. Megan Haala reached on an error. Sydnee Helget’s double to left field scored Brennan and Haala for a 2-0 Greyhound lead. Alex Hornick’s single scored Helget which gave Cathedral a 3-0 lead.

MVL tied the contest a 3-3 in the bottom of the third inning. Nora Otto singled to left field and scored on Briley Henderson’s single. Emily Pikal, a courtesy runner, and Henderson scored on Ashlyn Rodewald’s double.

Cathedral responded in the top of the fourth inning. Helget’s leadoff single to left field started things. The Greyhounds regained the lead at 4-3 when Helget scored on Ava Brennan’s single.

Madelyn Haala followed with a hit before Jaylin Hartness cracked a triple to left-center field to score Brennan and Haala for a 6-3 Cathedral lead.

In the top of the fifth, Jenna Hotovec reached base on a single. She stole second base and moved to third base on a sacrifice. Helget’s single to center field scored Hotovec and Cathedral led 7-3.

The Greyhounds sent 10 batters to the plate in the top of the sixth inning which resulted in six runs, five hits, and two errors Hartness, Kiah Helget, Hotovec, Hornick and Madelyn Haala got the hits for Cathedral.

With the bases loaded, Hornick’s hit scored two more runs for Cathedral. When the inning concluded, Cathedral held a 13-3 lead.

Rodewald hit a leadoff solo home run over the center-field fence in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Megan Haala picked up the win for Cathedral in Game 1. She had five strikeouts, no walks and five hits.

Helget went 3 for 4 with a double and three RBIs. Madelyn Haala went 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI.

Rodewald led MVL going 2 for 3 with a double, a home run and three RBIs. Kuck pitched all seven innings, giving up 14 hits and a walk for 10 runs while striking out four.

In Game 2, Megan Haala was the winning pitcher for Cathedral. She had three strikeouts, gave up three hits and no walks.

Madelyn Haala went 2 for 3 for Cathedral in Game 2. Kiah Helget went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and Megan Haala went 2 for 4 with three RBIs.

Rodewald went 1 for 2 with a home run and two RBIs in Game 2, while Henderson doubled in a run. Kuck took the loss in Game 2, pitching four innings and allowing 13 hits and four walks for three earned runs while striking out one.

Cathedral hosts Nicollet on Monday at Harman Park, while MVL is at Wabasso on Monday.
