That’s been the mindset for New Ulm Junior Legion Gold head coach Jeff Ferrell all summer when called for, and it was on his mind Tuesday during a DI Junior Legion Sub-State G Baseball Tournament game.

Despite allowing the Marshall Junior Legion Black to take a 5-0 lead in the fourth inning, the Junior Gold got a run back in the fifth and plated seven more runs in the seventh to run back and earn an 8-5 win at American Legion Field.

The win moves New Ulm on to a 2 p.m. winners bracket game Wednesday back at American Legion Field, where it will play the winner of Tuesday night’s New Prague-Worthington game. Worthington defeated the Mankato American 14-8 in 11 innings earlier on Tuesday.

“Even though we were down, we never felt we were out of it,” Ferrell said. “With this group, I never think of that. Any team in New Ulm, I never think of that.”

Owen Castleman led the Junior Gold at the plate, going 2 for 4, while Noah Gode and Kaden Stueber each went 1 for 3 with two RBIs. Gode’s hit was a big two-run double in the seventh to have New Ulm within two.

“Noah Gode came up with great, big-time hit,” Ferrell said. “Told him before the at-bat, ‘Stop thinking, just react and play. He had a nice swing on a pitch, a fastball, laid off a curveball, he was down a strike and just had a great at-bat.”

Ryler Collins got the win in six innings, allowing seven hits and no walks for five unearned runs while striking out six.

Grady Wajer was 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs to lead Marshall at the plate, while Bennett Graven was 2 for 3. Jack Bly took the loss for Marshall in 6 1/3 innings, allowing six hits and three walks for six runs, three earned, while striking out nine.

Marshall got its first run of the game in the third with two outs when Wajer scored from third on a passed ball.

Back-to-back singles with one out in the fourth by Graven and Rocco Rignell were followed with an error that saw Peyton Beek reach and load the bases for Bly. Bly grounded out to give Marshall a 2-0 lead before a two-run double by Wajer made it 4-0. An RBI single by Breandan Price put Marshall up 5-0.

In the top of the fifth, Parker Ranweiler came home from third on a missed hit-and-run swing that saw Miles Castleman take off for second and get caught in a rundown with two outs. Despite getting caught, he bought enough time for Ranweiler to come home and get New Ulm on the board.

After Collins struck out the side in the bottom of the sixth, New Ulm had one last shot to keep the game alive.

Mission accomplished.

Trevan Thordson walked to lead off the inning before Mitchell Hopp singled and Ranweiler was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Bly got a strikeout after that, but Gode doubled to right to score two and make it a 5-3 game. Stueber then singled to left to score two and tie the game at 5-all, prompting a pitching change that put Graven on the hill.

Levi Hopp was hit by a pitch before Collins grounded out to score Stueber and give New Ulm the lead. A ground ball hit by Thordson went between the legs of the Marshall second baseman for another two New Ulm runs.

After taking the 8-5 lead, Owen Castleman took the mound in the bottom of the seventh. Despite an error allowing Bly to reach to lead things off, the New Ulm right-hander got a strikeout, a groundout and another strikeout to end the game and pick up the save.

“I’m very proud of how we kept competing,” Ferrell said. “Some things didn’t go our way early, obviously, because it was a 5-0 game, but we felt we could get some good at-bats because we thought we were swinging at curveballs early and we stayed off that. We said we were looking fastball, fastball, fastball and until you obviously get two strikes, you’ve got to swing at a curveball. We said, ‘We’re taking curveball, swinging at everything else.’

“Last inning, we made him pitch a little bit and we were taking pitches and I think we did a really nice job. … His pitch count was up, what happened to us earlier in that third inning, same thing happened to him and that’s this age group. Things are gonna happen.”

Marshall will continue in the elimination bracket of the tournament at 9 a.m. Wednesday.
