Spikin’ in the Street returns to downtown

NEW ULM – The Fourth Annual Spikin’ in the Street Sand Volleyball Tournament comes to downtown New Ulm, Friday, July 31 and Saturday, Aug. 1
Eight sand volleyball court and approximately 1,300 tons of sand–nearly 70 dump truck loads–will transform Minnesota Street into a sporting venues for the weekend. The tournament has drawn teams and spectators from throughout the region. Registration for all divisions are already full, with 92 teams set to compete for cash payouts in A, B, C, and Recreational divisions. Pool play will be followed by single-elimination tournament brackets.
The weekend kicks off on Friday, July 31, with the Pre-Party in the Sand from 5 to 11 p.m. New this year, Division C pool play begins Friday evening. The evening will also feature music, food vendors, and the return of the Rolling Thunder Wrestling Club’s Downtown Throwdown beginning at 6 p.m.
Tournament play continues throughout the day on Saturday, August 1, with matches beginning at 7 a.m. and continuing into the evening. Spectators are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and spend the day enjoying the tournament.
Downtown restaurants, bars, and retailers will be open throughout the weekend, and many establishments within the tournament area will offer beverages that can be enjoyed throughout the designated festival grounds.
Volunteers are still needed throughout the weekend to assist with a variety of event activities, including team registration, sand assistance, event cleanliness, and family activities. Businesses interested in sponsoring the event are also encouraged to contact the Chamber.
Spikin’ in the Street is privately funded by local business sponsors and organized by volunteers and the New Ulm Area Chamber of Commerce. Funds raised support the promotion of New Ulm and the ongoing efforts of the New Ulm Business & Retail Association.
