SLEEPY EYE 10, LAKE CRYSTAL 0 (5 INNINGS)

RUTHTON — Sleepy Eye made short work of Lake Crystal on Tuesday in the American Junior Legion DII Southwest Sub-State Baseball Tournament Semifinals, winning 10-0 in five innings.

The game ended in five innings due to the 10-run lead rule.

Merrick Mathiowetz pitched all five innings to get the shutout, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out six. At the plate to lead Sleepy Eye was Derek Wales, who was 2 for 2 with a double and three runs scored, while Jaxon Saenz was 1 for 3 with a triple and three RBIs.

Mathiowetz also was 1 for 3 with three RBIs.

Sleepy Eye plays in the sub-state championship on Monday against the winner of this Sunday’s elimination bracket finals. The championship game is scheduled for a 5 p.m. first pitch, with a second game beginning around 7:30 p.m. if needed. Sleepy Eye needs just one win to advance to the state tournament.

SPRINGFIELD 14, ST. CLAIR 3 (5 INNINGS)

RUTHTON — Springfield downed St. Clair 14-3 on Tuesday afternoon in an elimination bracket game of the American Junior Legion DII Southwest Sub-State Baseball Tournament.

The game ended in five innings due to the 10-run lead rule.

Springfield will next play at 1 p.m. Sunday against Slayton in the elimination bracket semifinals, with the winner playing Lake Crystal at 4 p.m. Sunday in the elimination bracket finals. The winner of that elimination bracket finals game will take on Sleepy Eye in the sub-state finals Monday at 5 p.m., but they will need to beat Sleepy Eye in that 5 p.m. game and then again in a 7:30 p.m. game Monday to advance to the state tournament.

Ely Streich led Springfield at the plate, going 2 for 2 with two walks, an RBI and two runs scored, while Thomas Beers was 2 for 3 with two doubles, a walk and three RBIs. Thomas Hesse also was 1 for 2 with a homer, a walk, two RBIs and two runs scored for Springfield, while Max Moriarty was 1 for 2 with a double and two RBIs and Blake Wilhelmi had a double.

Hesse also got the pitching win in four innings, allowing five hits and one walk for three runs, two earned, while striking out two. Paxton Runck pitched the fifth and allowed no hits, walks or runs while striking out two.
