BOYS BASKTBALL

GFW 72, Wabasso 50

WABASSO — Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop downed Wabasso 72-50 on Monday night in a Tomahawk Conference boys basketball game.

Easton Taylor led the Thunderbirds in the win with 16 points, while Brayden Rubendall had 13 points and Cole Jacobson had 11 points.

Wabasso was led by Tristen Larson’s 16 points, while Karson Bock had 11 points.

Wabasso is at St. Mary’s Tuesday night for conference action, while GFW hosts Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther for nonconference action Tuesday night.

Lester Prairie 77,

Cedar Mountain 60

MORGAN — Lester Prairie defeated Cedar Mountain 77-60 on Monday night in a nonconference boys basketball game.

Branndon Pendleton led the Cougars with 15 points, while Dakota Pendleton Sam had 14 points, six assists and six rebounds and Blake Steffl had 11 points and four assists.

Cedar Mountain is scheduled to travel to Okabena for a 7:30 p.m. nonconference game with Heron Lake-Okabena on Thursday.

GHEC 79, Nicollet 78, OT

NICOLLET — Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther battled back to defeat Nicollet 79-78 in overtime on Monday in a Valley Conference girls basketball game.

Olivia Mattson led GHEC/T/ML with 32 points, while McKenna Benck had 20 points.

Nicollet was led by Brooklyn Bode’s 22 points, while Leah Bode had 17 points and seven rebounds and Savannah Klockziem had 15 points. Shannon Soost had a double-double for Nicollet with 10 points and 13 rebounds, while Hatti Hansen added 10 points.

Nicollet (3-5) is at Sleepy Eye for a nonconference game at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

MCW 68, Madelia 22

MADELIA — Martin County West rolled by madelia 68-22 on Monday night in a Valley Conference girls basketball game.

Madelia was led by Ella Bergeman’s 5 points, nine rebounds, one block and one steal, while Alicia Grebenc, Ollie Glover and Alicia Lugo each had 5 points.

Madelia is at New Ulm Cathedral for a 7:30 p.m. nonconference game Tuesday.

Nienhaus, Johnson, Dake lead NUA at

Redwood River Riot

REDWOOD FALLS — The New Ulm Area wrestling team competed at the Redwood River Riot over the weekend, with Winsten Nienhaus and Kane Johnson leading the Eagles’ varsity team.

Nienhaus finished fourth at 145. He received a bye in the first round and then went on to pick up a 6-0 decision over Kaden Brooks of Sartell-Saint Stephen. Nienhaus then defeated Alexander Schuh of Tracy-Milroy-Balaton/Westbrook-Walnut Grove 12-6 in the quarterfinal before falling to MAHACA’s Davin Rose by fall and Canby’s Lane Fink in the third-place match by an 11-3 major decision.

Johnson finished fourth at 106 for the Eagles, defeating Redwood Valley’s Casen Myers (fall, 1:26), Canby’s Daven VanEngen (fall, :30) and Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg’s Colton Noble (7-1 decision). In the semifinal, Windom/Mountain Lake’s Preston Xayachak got a 6-4 decision over Johnson to drop Johnson to a third-place match, where Edina’s Anthony Nichols earned a 10-9 decision over Johnson.

Heavyweight Evan Thompson placed fifth for the Eagles, going 4-1 with three falls. He defeated Mankato West’s Noah Dinsmore (fall, 1:06) and Fulda-Murrary County Central’s Rylan Klein (fall, 2:30) before losing a 2-1 decision to Brady Rhode of Dawson-Boyd-Lac Qui Parle-Montevideo United’s in the quarterfinal to fall to consolation bracket. Thompson then pinned MAHACA’s Carter Gibson in 2:20 and defeated Jason Jones of KMS by a 3-1 decision in the fifth-place match.

NUA’s Elizabeth Dake took first at the Riot in the girls’ 145-pound bracket, pinning St. James Area’s Deborah Velasco in 20 seconds before pinning Marshall’s Sierra Bahr in 23 seconds.
