NEW ULM — Zach Hubbard’s two-out single in the bottom of the seventh inning scored Dirk Haynes from third and lifted the New Ulm Eagles to a 2-1 win over Holy Family Catholic Friday afternoon at Mueller Park in a nonconference baseball game.
Tanner Backer got the win for the Eagles (9-3).
Backer went the distance, scattering four hits while striking out four. The run allowed by Backer was unearned.
Ethan Ryan took the loss for the Fire (3-7). He also went the distance, allowing seven hits — two of which came in the Eagles’ seventh inning.
Hubbard led the Eagles offense with three of the seven hits. Candon Briggs had the other New Ulm RBI with a sixth-inning squeeze bunt.

“Tanner pitched well but he was not sharp early,” New Ulm coach Jeff Ferrell said. “But he found it and he did very well. And [catcher] Candon called a great game behind the plate — I called maybe five or six pitches in the game. He and Tanner were a great battery today.”
Ferrell said that the Fire played a great defensive game against New Ulm.
“I talked to their coach before the game and they kicked the ball around in their last game, but they made every play today,” he said.
The Eagles, who host Belle Plaine on Tuesday, started their game-winning rally in the home half of the seventh when Dirk Haynes led off the inning with a double over the head of Fire left fielder Will Otteson.
Haynes scampered to third on a wild pitch.
Ryan then got the first two outs of the inning on strikeouts before Hubbard drove Ryan’s first pitch over the head of shortstop Noah Galvin for the win.
The Fire had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when Galvin reached second on a one-out infield throwing error.
After a groundout Otteson singled him in.
The Eagles had a threat in the bottom of the third inning when Hubbard collected his second of three hits with a single and Owen Castleman reached on a fielder’s choice.
But Ryan ended the inning on a infield groundout.
New Ulm mounted another scoring threat in the bottom of the fifth when Kyle Albrecht laced a one-out double.
But Ryan was up to the challenge as he set down the next two batters.
But in the bottom of the sixth, the Eagles tied the game at 1-1 without the aid of a hit.
Castleman led off the inning with a walk. He went to second on a passed ball before a Backer groundout moved him to third.
From there, Briggs brought him in with the tying run with a bunt.
“It was not a [suicide] squeeze,” Ferrell said.”It was a safety squeeze. Ryan had been all over the place [with pitches] and we did not know where he was going to go, so we tried that safety squeeze and got it down.”
Ferrell said that despite being down and frustrated early, his team always puts themselves in a position to win.
“Today we did just that,” he said. “We start off that [seventh] inning with a double, and then Hubbard comes through with a single and game over.”
