BLOOMING PRAIRIE — Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop defeated Blooming Prairie 38-20 on Friday night in a Mid Southeast District football game.
Garret Schmidt led the GFW offense with 17 carries for 126 yards and three touchdowns, while Rex Monson added a touchdown run and 65 yards on eight carries. Justin Messner had nine carries for 51 yards also for the Thunderbirds, while Nick TenEyck had 13 carries for 46 yards and a score.
The GFW defense was led by TenEcyk’s 5 1/2 tackles, while Easton Taylor had 4 1/2 tackles.
GFW is at Waterville-Elysian-Morristown for a Thursday night game next.
RCW 43,
Cedar Mountain 18
MORGAN — Renville County West downed Cedar Mountain 43-18 on Friday night in 9-man, South District football action.
Cooper Freitag completed 20 of 31 passes for 175 yards, a touchdown and an interception for the Cougars in the loss. He also rushed for 95 yards and two touchdowns on 28 carries. Lane Guggisberg caught eight passes for 114 yards and a touchdown for Cedar Mountain, while Christian Belcher had eight catches for 29 yards and three carries for 41 yards.
While RCW earned the win, Cedar Mountain led 30:29-17:31 in time of possession and had 316 yards of total offense to RCW’s 256 yards. RCW had four rushing touchdowns and three takeaways.
On defense for Cedar Mountain, Nate Sandgren led with 4 1/2 total tackles, while Guggisberg, Dante Otto and Jaxson Kerkhoff each had four tackles.
Cedar Mountain is off until Oct. 19 when it hosts Westbrook/Walnut Grove.
PREP VOLLEYBALL
Madelia 3, GHEC/T/ML 2
MADELIA — Madelia topped Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther 25-16, 22-25, 18-25, 25-20, 15-11 on Friday night in a Valley Conference volleyball match.
The Blackhawks were led by Brooke Lensing’s 18 kills and three ace serves, while Jada Taylor had 18 digs and four aces, Ashley Sorenson had 33 set assists and five kills and Corban Tatro had nine aces. Ashlynn Sweet added six kills and three aces for Madelia.
Madelia (13-13, 5-2) are at Cleveland for a conference matchup on Tuesday.

Springfield/CM boys, girls finish 4th at Sleepy Eye
SLEEPY EYE — The Springfield/Cedar Mountain boys and girls cross-country teams finished fourth on Thursday at an invite at Sleepy Eye Golf Club.
Leading the girls was Katie Thram, who took first overall (20:12). Skyla Dauer finished ninth with a time of 22:25, while Abby Groebner took 18th (23:18).
Leading the boys was Matthew Groebner, who took 11th (17:47), while Ben Potter took 18th (18:17).
The Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s/Sleepy Eye/New Ulm Cathedral boys finished sixth at its home invite, with Noah Christensen taking eighth (17:30) and Raul Rodriguez taking 20th (18:32).
The SM/SE/NUC girls took ninth, with Elle Kyllonen finishing 26th overall with a time of 23:52.
The Minnesota Valley Lutheran boys and girls cross-country teams also raced, with the MVL boys taking eighth. The girls varsity team did not have enough runners to place overall.
MVL’s top boy runner was Ben Halvorson, who finished 36th with a time of 19:46. MVL’s top girl runner was Priscilla Bauer, who took 20th with a time of 23:33.

UMM 3, MLC 0
MORRIS — The University of Minnesota Morris swept Martin Luther College 25-17, 25-10, 25-19 on Friday night in an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference volleyball match.
Hannah Willems and Lydia Feidt had six kills apiece in the loss to lead MLC (6-12, 2-4), while Abigail Winkel had five kills. Kylie Wolf had 13 set assists for MLC, while Naomi Bridgemen had eight digs.
