Wolverines drop Eagles into elimination bracket
GAYLORD — Sibley East left-hander Jake Schmidt did it with his arm and bat Saturday afternoon.
Schmidt held top-seeded New Ulm to just five hits and struck out five while adding three hits to his resume as the third-seeded Wolverines dominated the Eagles 13-2 at Walsh Field in a Section 2AA winner’s bracket game.
Schmidt did not walk a batter and held New Ulm bats without a hit until the fourth inning as the Wolverines improved to 16-5.
Jaden Drill took the pitching loss for New Ulm, now 13-10.
Drill was charged with eight runs in 3 2/3 innings of work.
Riley Drexler had three RBIs for Sibley East. Drexler and Sam Ebert each had a double.
Carter Lang had two of the Eagles’ hits and drove in both runs.
The win moves Sibley East — the lone unbeaten team in the section playoffs — into the winner’s bracket game on Thursday at 5 p.m. in Gaylord.
New Ulm drops down into elimination play at 7:30 p.m.Tuesday in Gaylord.
They will meet the winner of the 5 p.m. game between New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva and Belle Plaine.
Sibley East used crooked number innings in the second, third and fourth innings to jump to an 8-0 lead over the Eagles.
The Wolverines scored three runs in the second on an infield single, a walk and a double steal. An Ebert double made it 2-0 before Ebert trotted home on a single.
Sibley East plated two more runs in the third on two walks and an infield hit, followed by a fielder’s choice and a groundout.
Three more runs by the Wolverines in the fourth made it an 8-0 contest.
New Ulm finally got to Schmidt for a run in the bottom of the inning when Jack Albrecht got the Eagles’ first hit of the game with a leadoff double. He scored on a Lang RBI single.
The Eagles sliced the lead to 8-2 in the bottom of the sixth on a Lang run-scoring triple.
But Sibley East salted the game away with a five-run outburst in the top of the eighth inning for a 13-2 cushion.
