Eagles down Trojans, Castleman strikes out 6 in relief
NEW ULM — New Ulm plated four runs in the bottom of the sixth and went on to a 10-3 win over Worthington Thursday night in a Big South Conference baseball game at Johnson Park.
Owen Castleman got the win for New Ulm in relief of starter Dirk Haynes. Haynes went the first 3 1/3 innings and allowed three runs — all unearned — and fanned four. Castleman struck out six and walked three.
Ethan Anderson absorbed the loss for the Trojans.
Zach Hubbard and Haynes each had two hits for the Eagles.
“We scored four runs in the second — we bunted really well in that inning,” New Ulm head coach Jeff Ferrell said. “We ran the bases really well and we gave ourselves a chance to put runners in scoring position.”
Tied 1-1 going into the bottom of the second, the Eagles used small ball to score four runs.
Castleman led off the inning with a single to center before both Ryan Rathmann and Haynes reached on consecutive bunt singles to load the bases.
A Hunter Larson walk forced in Castleman. Rathmann came home on a fielder’s choice before an error added another run for a 4-1 lead.
A wild pitch plated another run for a 5-1 cushion.
“They had a hard time fielding the bunt,” Ferrell said. “So why not keep doing it.”
But in the top of the third, Worthington used three New Ulm errors — including two errant pickoff attempts at second — to score two runs and cut the New Ulm lead to 5-3.
“We need to work on those pickoff throws,” Ferrell “We gave them [two] runs in that inning.”
The Eagles added a run in the bottom of the fifth on a Hubbard RBI single and then pushed four runs across in the bottom of the sixth on a wild pitch, a Castleman RBI single and an error that added two more runs.
“We need to get better and we did find a way to win,” Ferrell said.
