NEW ULM — New Ulm scored twice in the top of the seventh inning and Jack Albrecht ended the game with a strikeout with two Trojans runners on base as New Ulm topped Worthington 9-8 in the first game of a Big South Conference doubleheader at New Ulm High School.

New Ulm won the nightcap 14-4.

Albrecht picked up the win in relief of starter Ben Hohensee. Hohensee went five innings and was charged with five runs.

Triston Sauerbrei took the loss for Worthington (3-6, 0-2).

Taylor Hansen and Jace Schaefer each had three hits for New Ulm.

“It was a great outing for Ben, who went four plus innings before he lost it with a couple of walks,” New Ulm coach Kevin Briggs said. “We walked too many batters [in the first game] and those runs ended up scoring.”

Each team scored a run in the first with the Eagles coming on a lead-off triple from Maddox Mortenson, who scored on an Albrecht single.

The Eagles added single runs in the second and third innings on Schaefer’s sacrifice fly in the second and a Jaden Drill groundout in the third.

Worthington scored twice in the third to tie the game at 3.

But the Eagles scored two runs in the fourth when Schaefer singled and Mortenson walked. Albrecht followed with a free pass. Carter Lang was hit by a pitch to force in a run before Mortenson scored on a wild pitch.

Three walks and a three-run double from Coy Turner in the fifth gave Worthington a 6-5 lead in the back-and-forth gane.

Each team scored twice in the sixth before New Ulm was able to get the win in the seventh.

“This was a good battle and we did not quit when we got down,” Briggs said. “We had one more play than they did.”

In the second game, Mortonsen was 2 for 3 and Albrecht scored three runs. Carter Lang was 2 for 4 with two runs scored and Taylor Hansen was 2 for 3 with three RBIs.

Lucas Suess pitched two innings and earned the win. He allowed two runs and struck out one.
