MLC roundup: 4×100 relay, Habben and Romsdahl break records

WOMEN’S TRACK AND FIELD

ST. PETER — The Martin Luther College women’s track and field squad participated in its second meet at Gustavus on Saturday. The Knights had multiple PRs and claimed first in the 3000m steeplechase, as Nicole Trapp placed first with a mark of 13:01.48.

Jemimah Habben broke an MLC record in the 5K event, clocking in at 18:44.62. The previous record time was 19:19.02 by Emilee Koltz in 2014. The other records that were surpassed on Saturday were the discus thrown by Madelinn Romsdahl, who tossed it 39.48 meters. Romsdahl broke Melissa Neuman’s record of 37.28 set in 2021. Romsdahl also took fourth in the shot put (11.73 meters) and fifth in the javelin (31.61 meters).

Grace Hahm placed fifth with a PR in the 1500m (4:58.97), while Sarah Felsing took sixth in the 800m with a PR of 2:27.03.

The 4x100m relay team took third with a season best time of 51.56 seconds (Mariah Schultz, Naomi Foley, Elise Schwartz, and Hannah Rodmyre. The time was also an MLC record as the four runners beat out last year’s result of 51.69 seconds. (Foley, Schultz, Rodmyre, and Macie VanDenHeuvel were apart of the event).

MEN’S TRACK AND FIELD

ST. PETER The MLC men’s Outdoor Track and Field team competed in their second meet at Gustavus this season and earned three 1st-place finishes.

Jeremiah Stanton had a big day and recorded two of those 1st place results when the senior had a PR in the 110m hurdles (16.02 seconds) and the top spot in the triple jump (13.60 meters).

Stanton was also a member of the MLC 4x100m relay team that placed second with a time of 42.69 (Donovin Wittenberg, Stephen Wietzke, Arthur Robinson).

Austin Rubendall earned his first collegiate first place result in the javelin with a mark of 48.62 meters. Jack Pittenger took third in the javelin (46.17 meters).

Wietzke finished near the top again in a couple more events, placing second in the 100m (10.89) and in the 200m with a season-best mark of 21.92 seconds.

Wittenberg finished fourth in the 200m with a PR time of 22.49 seconds.

R.J. Perry had another solid meet in the throwing events, taking third in the shot put (14.87 meters) and fourth in the discus (PR 43.07 meters). The Knights had two other throwers finish within the top 10 of the discus, with Daniel Reinke claiming sixth (42.33m) and Jesus Medina taking seventh (PR 41.62).

MEN’S BASEBALL

NORTHWESTERN 4, MLC 0

ROSEVILLE — The MLC baseball team took on the Northwestern Eagles this weekend in a conference series on the road. The Knights battled hard throughout, but were swept by the Eagles 4-0 in Game 1 on Friday and then 6-1 (Game 2) and 12-2 in Game 3 on Saturday.

UNW 4, MLC 0 (Game 1)

MLC received a very nice outing from starting pitcher Owen Proctor, who threw 6 innings on the mound, allowing only four runs on four hits. The freshman struck out five batters, and three of the four runs were on sacrifice flies.

Silas Winkel also pitched well in his two innings in relief, allowing no runs.

UNW 6, MLC 1 (Game 2)

In the first contest on Saturday, the Knights kept up with the Northwestern bats and recorded seven hits compared to the Eagles’ nine base hits.

A 2-run home run in the seventh and an RBI double in the eighth frame proved to be the difference makers for Northwestern, pulling away late.

MLC had opportunities to get more runs on the scoreboard, leaving seven runners on base. The lone run came in the top of the seventh when Evan Kasa singled in a run.

Parker Winghart and Jackson Anderson paced the Knights with two hits apiece. Anderson was also active on the base pads, stealing two bases. Aidan Berg had another solid performance for the Knights, pitching six innings allowing two runs (0 earned) on five hits. The sophomore also fanned six batters, which put him at 66 total, tying Zach Pudlo for the most in MLC history.

UNW 12, MLC 2 (Game 3)

Northwestern had the bats going in the final contest, scoring six runs through two innings. In the first inning, the Eagles capitalized on a 2-run homer. The rest of the way, Northwestern moved base runners over and got them via sac flies and groundouts, along with multiple RBI singles.

MLC scored in the top of the first off of a Carlos Walta RBI single. John Westendorf drove in Michel Krebs from third base, who recorded a triple on the previous at-bat in the fifth frame.

MLC will have its final home series of the season next weekend when they host North Central, starting on Friday, May 1, at 3 p.m.

WOMEN’S SOFTBALL

NORTHWESTERN 9, MLC 0

NEW ULM — The MLC softball team took on Northwestern this weekend and honored the parents and seniors on the squad.

Northwestern outscored MLC 26-1 with a 9-0 win on Friday and a 9-1 (Game 2) and 8-0 (Game 3) on Saturday.

UNW 9, MLC 0 (Game 1)

The Eagles totaled 21 hits in the first game and belted three home runs in doing so. Northwestern earned a complete game shutout performance from Ireland Strubbe, who struck out 10.

For MLC, Chloe Berg picked up two of the Knights’ three base hits, including a double.

UNW 9, MLC 1 (Game 2)

In game two, Northwestern scored four runs in the first frame to take an early 4-0 lead. MLC scored its lone run in the bottom of the second on a Rachel McCaughna RBI groundout, scoring Berg. From there, the Eagles scored two runs in the fourth and sixth innings.

Despite the loss, Rank was in the circle again for the Knights and struck out four Northwestern batters. Kiara Humann led MLC in the field with three assists at shortstop.

UNW 8, MLC 0 (Game 3)

In the final match up, MLC recorded a team high in hits (7) for the weekend series. The top of the lineup produced two hits in the No. 2 (Chloe Koschnitzke) and No. 3 (Kaylee Pickering) spots in the lineup.

Northwestern used two doubles and a triple to help them get ahead 5-0 after scoring two in the first and three runs in the top of the second. The Eagles’ relief pitcher came in and tossed six strikeouts in four innings pitched.

Berg led MLC with six putouts at first base.

MLC softball will play its final home contest of the season in a single game against Bethany Lutheran on Tuesday, April 28, at 5 p.m.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

NORTHWESTERN 7, MLC 0

NORTHWESTERN 6, MLC 1

OWATONNA — The 2026 MLC women’s tennis team finished its season today with a home match that was switched to Owatonna. In the match, MLC took on Northwestern, which defeated the Knights 6-1.

Despite the sweep in doubles play and five points from singles victories, MLC earned an impressive win in No. 1 singles from Britney Prahl, who wrapped up her collegiate career a third-set tiebreaker victory 6-1, 6-7 (3-7), 6-4.

The Knights were very close to achieving another point in their favor with Rebekah Schroeder’s effort in No. 4 singles, which ended 6-4, 4-6, 0-1 (7-10) loss.

MLC women’s tennis finished third in the UMAC North Standings with a 6-9 overall, 3-2 conference record.

On the men’s side, the Knights fell 7-0 to the Eagles. MLC gave it a close call in No. 1 doubles (Johannes Bourman/Eli Stern) as they fell 4-6. Abraham Schlomer kept it competitive as well in No. 5 singles, 4-6, 3-6.

MLC men’s tennis will play again on Tuesday, April 28, at 4 p.m. at home against Buena Vista University.
