SIBLEY EAST 5, MVL 1 (GAME 1)

MVL 6, SIBLEY EAST 5 (GAME 2)

NEW ULM — The Sibley East Wolverines opened up a South Central Conference baseball doubleheader against Minnesota Valley Lutheran with a 5-1 win on Tuesday, but the Chargers did enough to hold on and take the nightcap 6-5 at Johnson Park.

In the Game 1 win, Nathan Schauer got the mound win in six innings of work, allowing three hits and three walks for one earned run while striking out seven. Ben Fredrichs pitched the seventh, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out one.

Alex Bachmann, Schauer and Will Feterl each went 1 for 3 with an RBI apiece to lead the Wolverines at the plate in the opener.

For MVL in Game 1, Kyan Kube took the complete-game loss, allowing four hits and two walks for three earned runs while striking out two. Aiden Eckberg was 1 for 2 to lead the MVL bats, while Aiden Weisensel was 1 for 3 with an RBI and a double.

In Game 2, Connor Bode got the complete-game win, allowing nine hits and no walks for two earned runs while striking out three. Grayson Bode led MVL at the plate in Game 2, going 2 for 3 with an RBI, while Connor Bode was 2 for 4 with a double, Eckberg was 1 for 2 with an RBI, Rogan Scriver was 1 for 3 with an RBI and Gavin Pribbenow added a double.

Carson Schmidt took the loss on the mound in Game 2 in five innings of work, allowing seven hits and two walks for two earned runs while striking out five. Schauer was 2 for 3 to lead the Wolverines at the plate, while Feterl was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and Landon Friederichs was 2 for 4. The Wolverines trailed 5-0 after the first inning in Game 2 and came back to trail 6-5 after the fifth, but Connor Bode and the Chargers held on to split the doubleheader.

MVL (4-6) is at Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s on Friday for a nonconference game, while Sibley East (7-4) travels to take on Eagle Ridge Academy on Friday night in nonconference action.

GFW 9, ST. MARY’S 8

FAIRFAX — Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop held off Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s 9-8 on Tuesday in a Tomahawk Division baseball game.

The Knights scored two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to cut their deficit to a run, but the Firebirds held on for their third win of the season.

Luke Bastian was 3 for 4 with a triple, a double and two RBIs to lad GFW at the plate, while Owen Swenson was 2 for 2 with two doubles, two walks and two RBIs. Gavin Arcenis was 2 for 3 with an RBI also for the Firebirds, while Kaden Rieke had a double and an RBI and Cole Kemkes had a single and an RBI. Koufax Rose pitched 5 1/3 innings to get the win, allowing eight hits and two walks for one earned run while striking out four.

St. Mary’s was led by Tyler Mathiowetz, who was 2 for 3 with a double and four runs scored, while Kyle Nelson was 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI and Merrick Mathiowetz was 1 for 2 with a double, three walks and an RBI. Merrick Mathiowetz took the pitching loss in 2 1/3 innings, allowing seven hits and five walks for six earned runs while striking two.

GFW (3-8) is at Springfield on Thursday for a Tomahawk game, while St. Mary’s (5-6) hosts Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart in a Tomahawk doubleheader on Thursday.

MADELIA 6, CLEVELAND 0

CLEVELAND — Madelia remained undefeated on the season by shutting out Cleveland 6-0 Tuesday in a Valley Division baseball game.

Tate Becker and Zach Jacobs combined for the shutout, with Jacobs pitching four innings and getting the win. He allowed one hit and three walks while striking out five, while Becker pitched three hitless innings, allowing one walk while striking out seven.

Evan Coil was 2 for 3 with an RBI to lead the Blackhawks at the plate, while Noel Davila was 2 for 4 with an RBI and Tony Zaleski was 1 for 4 with a double and two RBIs.

Madelia (12-0) hosts Cleveland in a Valley rematch on Thursday.

CLEVELAND 10, NICOLLET 0 (5 INNINGS)

CLEVELAND — Cleveland defeated Nicollet 10-0 in five innings in a Valley Division baseball game on Tuesday.

Landyn Erickson took the loss for Nciollet, allowing two earned runs with one strikeout. At the plate, Erickson and Elliot McKenny each had a hit.

Nicollet plays at Medford on Friday.

PREP SOFTBALL

CATHEDRAL 8, WABASSO 0 (GAME 1)

CATHEDRAL 1, WABASSO 0 (GAME 2)

WABASSO — New Ulm Cathedral earned a sweep and pair of shutouts over Wabasso in a Tomahawk Division softball doubleheader on Tuesday, winning 8-0 in Game 1 and 1-0 in Game 2.

Jayde Altermatt got both shutouts in the circle for the Greyhounds.

In Game 1, Altermatt allowed six hits and no walks while striking out 10 in the complete-game win. Leah Wilson was 4 for 4 with an RBI to lead the Greyhounds at the plate in Game 1, while Altermatt was 3 for 4 with an RBI, Margo Finstad was 2 for 5 with a double and an RBI and Abbey Hillesheim doubled and drove in two runs.

For Wabasso in Game 1, Macy Rohlik was 2 for 3 to lead the Rabbits at the plate, while Aylah Jenniges took the pitching loss in three innings, allowing eight hits and no walks for five earned runs while striking out two.

In Game 2, Altermatt allowed six hits and no walks while striking out three in the complete-game win. The Greyhounds were held to three hits in this game as Margo Finstad was 1 for 2 with an RBI, Brynn Wilfahrt was 1 for 2 and Thea Paszkiewicz was 1 for 3.

Jenniges took the Game 2 loss, allowing three hitd and no walks for one earned run while striking out three. Rohlik was 3 for 3 to lead the Rabbits at the plate, while Cam Irlbeck was 2 for 3.

Cathedral (9-2) hosts Lester Prairie in a Tomahawk game on Wednesday, while Wabasso (9-4) is at Sleepy Eye for a Tomahawk game on Thursday.

ST. CLAIR 16, MVL 6 (GAME 1, 5 INNINGS)

ST. CLAIR 18, MVL 2 (GAME 2, 3 INNINGS)

ST. CLAIR — Minneaota Valley Lutheran was swept in a South Central Conference softball doubleheader on Tuesday, falling 16-6 in Game 1 and 18-2 in Game 2.

Taryn Gunderson led MVL at the plate in game 1, going 1 for 2 with an RBI, while Nora Grace Otto was 1 for 1. Otto took the loss in 3 1/3 innings, allowing 10 hits and a walk for eight earned runs while striking out one.

In Game 2, the Chargers were led by Katlyn Stadick and Jess Meunier, who each went 1 for 1, while Grace Onken was 1 for 2 with an RBI. Stadick took the loss in Game 2, allowing 10 hits and five walks for five earned runs while striking out one.

MVL (4-8) travels to take on Martin County West on Monday.

SPRINGFIELD 3, RRC/WWG 0

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield shut out Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove 3-0 on Tuesday in a nonconference softball game.

Regan Beadell got the complete-game shutout in the circle, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out 10. Abby Groebner led the Tigers at the plate, going 2 for 3 with two doubles and two RBIs, while Kendall Krueger was 1 for 2 with a walk.

Springfield (7-4) is at Winthrop to take on Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop in Tomahawk action on Thursday.

MADELIA 15, GHEC/T/ML 0 (4 INNINGS)

MADELIA — Madelia shut out Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther on Tuesday 15-0 in a Valley Division softball game.

The game ended after four innings due to the 15-run lead rule.

Lauryn Grev led Madelia by going 3 for 3 with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored, while Alicia Lugo was 3 for 3 with an RBI and three runs scored and Madelyn Lehman was 2 for 3 with a homer, two RBIs and two runs scored. Grace Tatro was also 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs for the Blackhawks, while Emmy Johnson was 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored and Kellie Koberoski was 2 for 4 with two doubles, four RBIs and two runs scored. Emily Jacobs got the pitching win in four innings, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out four.

Madelia (4-10) is at Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda for a nonconference game on Friday.

ST. MARY’S 10, GFW 6 (GAME 1)

ST. MARY’S 14, GFW 3 (GAME 2)

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s swept Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 10-6 and 14-3 in a Tomahawk Division softball doubleheader on Tuesday.

Neil Weiss earned the win in Game 1 for the Knights, striking out six and allowing six runs on four hits. At the plate, Joslyn Sellner was 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI, while Taylor Mathiowetz was 2 for 2 with an RBI. Weiss was 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs, and Eva Schweiss was 2 for 4 with an RBI.

Natalie Zarn earned the win in Game 2, striking out four while allowing eight hits in seven innings. At the plate, Zarn was 2 for 2 with two RBIs, while Schwiess was 2 for 4 with a triple and four RBIs. Weiss was 2 for 3 with an RBI, while Sidney tauer was 2 for 4.

No statistics were reported for GFW.

St. Mary’s (5-6, 4-5) plays at Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Thursday, while GFW (2-7, 2-7) hosts Springfield on Thursday.

USC 10, SLEEPY EYE 3

SLEEPY EYE — A rough fourth inning saw things fall apart for Sleepy Eye during a nonconference softball game against the defending Class A state champions United South Central as USC took the lead and went on to win 10-3.

Sleepy Eye led 3-1 after three innings, but walks, hits and six Sleepy Eye errors helped USC jump in front and run away with the win.

Taylor Berkner took the pitching loss, allowing five earned runs on eight hits and nine walks while striking out eight. Sleepy Eye got two hits in the game off All-State pitcher Mariah Anderson, who struck out 15 and walked four. Jaelynn Schauman had a two-run homer to lead Sleepy Eye, while Callie Evers had Sleepy Eye’s other hit.

Sleepy Eye (10-3) hosts Wabasso on Thursday in Tomahawk action.

BOYS TENNIS

NEW ULM 5, ST. PETER 2

NEW ULM — New Ulm topped St. Peter 5-2 on Tuesday in a Big South Conference boys tennis meet.

New Ulm swept singles competition, led by No. 1 singled player Charlie Weidman, who defeated Jaxson Schaefer 6-1, 6-1. At No. 2 singles, Dan Brownfield defeated Brody Kennedy 6-1, 6-0, while Isaac Dittmer beat Kale Schmidt 7-5, 6-1 at No. 3 singles and Griffin Lehne defeated Enzo Valentini 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 at No. 4 singles.

New Ulm’s No. 3 doubles team of Hayden Owens and Cole Frederick also got a win over Jaego Smuder and Caleb Gilbertson 6-0, 6-4.

New Ulm (7-4) is at Blue Earth on Friday.

PREP GOLF

SEU BOYS 163, CATHEDRAL 195, BLHS 225

SEU GIRLS 215, CATHEDRAL 239

BUFFALO LAKE — Sleepy Eye United won both sides of a prep golf meet on Tuesday, with the boys scoring a 163 and the girls scoring a 215.

New Ulm Cathedral placed second for both boys and girls, with the boys scoring a 195 and the girls scoring a 239. The Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart boys scored a 225.

Cathedral’s Carter Wilson won the boys meet individually, scoring a 39. He was followed by SEU’s Nolan Kucera (40), Blaine Arneson (41) and Anderson Coulson (43) and Cathedral’s Jack Griebel (44). Parker Rath led BLHS by placing ningth (54).

SEU’s Sam Price won the girls side of the meet with a 43. She was followed by Cathedral’s Emma Hoffmann (53), SEU’s Kiara Murphy (52) and Cathedral’s Peyton Weisbrich and SEU’s Ella Pollard (56).
