Area rdp: Goblirsch qualifies for state gymnastics meet

ST. JAMES — New Ulm’s Kayla Goblirsch qualified for the state gymnastics meet in all-around with a score of 36.55, finishing second at the Section 2A meet on Thursday.

Goblirsch had a 9.15 on vault, 8.975 on bars, 9.125 on beam, and 9.225 on floor for New Ulm. It’s the fourth time she’s qualified for the state meet.

Goblirsch will compete next Saturday at the state meet at Roy Wilkins Auditorium in St. Paul.

Girls’ basketball

Cathedral 52, Madelia 37

MADELIA — New Ulm Cathedral’s Emily Schommer scored 18 points and Jenna Hotovec added 15 as Cathedral defeated Madelia in a nonconference girls’ basketball game on Thursday.

Katherine DeVlaeminck and Ollie Glover led Madelia with 13 points each.

Cathedral (5-16, 0-15) hosts Lester Prairie at 6 p.m. on Friday.

New Ulm 76,

Redwood Valley 29

REDWOOD FALLS — New Ulm defeated Redwood Valley in a Big South Conference girls’ basketball game on Thursday.

Brooklyn Lewis led the Eagles with 24 points, four rebounds and seven steals. Daviney Dreckman scored 11 points and had five rebounds and Kirsten Dennis had 9 points and two steals.

New Ulm (11-9, 5-5) plays at 7:15 p.m. on Friday at St. James.

St. Mary’s 89, CM 28

SLEEPY EYE — Madison Mathiowetz scored 37 points, had 20 rebounds, five assists and two steals as Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s defeated Cedar Mountain in Tomahawk Conference girls’ basketball on Thursday.

Allie Labat scored 13 points and had three steals and four assists. Reagan Severson scored 13 points and Morgan Mathiowetz finished with 7 points for the Knights (19-1, 14-0).

Megan Sandgren led Cedar Mountain (5-19, 2-14) with 19 points.

Springfield 54,

GHEC/T/ML 47

GRANADA — Springfield’s Emma Hauger scored 18 points, had five rebounds and four steals as the Tigers defeated Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther in a nonconference girls’ basketball game on Thursday.

Brooklyn Sturm finished with 13 points, had seven rebounds and six steals and Jasmine Novotny had 8 points and four rebounds. Maddie Digmann had 8 points and seven rebounds and Megan Ploeger finished with 7 points.

Springfield (10-12) plays at 8 p.m. on Monday at Wabasso.

Nicollet 66, GFW 31

WINTHROP — Nicollet defeated Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop on Thursday in nonconference girls’ basketball action.

Bryn Busse led GFW with 31 points. Marah Hulke scored 17 points and had 11 rebounds for Nicollet. Brooklyn Bode and Hayley Selby also had 17 points and Selby grabbed 15 rebounds.

Nicollet (14-10) hosts Sibley East on Tuesday and GFW (11-12) hosts Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Friday.

Boys’ basketball

Sleepy Eye 67, MVL 58

SLEEPY EYE — Marcus Martinez scored 25 points and Erizen Traconis scored 22 points as Sleepy Eye defeated Minnesota Valley Lutheran in Tomahawk Conference boys’ basketball action on Thursday.

Cole Thompson had 14 points and Ben Halverson scored 11 points for the Chargers.

Wabasso 72, Minneota 63

WABASSO — Wabasso’s Isaac Kronback scored 30 points as the Rabbits defeated Minneota in nonconference boys’ basketball on Thursday.

Noah Anderson and Jayden Goblisch each scored 10 for Wabasso (12-10).

Wabasso 60, Ortonville 18

WABASSO — Wabasso went 1-1 in its triangular on Thursday.

Kaysen Harms (106), Ashton Weidemann (113), Adryen Tietz (138), Chase Irlbeck (170), Sam Welch (195) and Wyatt Irlbeck all went 2-0 on the day for the Rabbits.
