SLEEPY EYE — Minnesota Valley Lutheran’s up-tempo play for the second night in a row made a big difference on Tuesday night for the Chargers.
A triple-double from senior guard Abbie Riederer didn’t hurt either.
Behind Riederer’s 30 points, 11 rebounds and 10 steals, the Chargers took down Sleepy Eye 59-48 in Tomahawk Conference girls’ basketball action at Sleepy Eye High School.
The Chargers were coming off of a 75-56 home win over St. James Area on Monday night, and they kept that same energy on Tuesday against the Indians, the No. 7-ranked team in Class A.
The Chargers remained unbeaten in the conference with the win over the Indians also and are now 10-2 overall and 6-0 in the conference.
“I think we just do a really good job of pumping each other up,” Riederer said. “And we’ve been with each other a long time and we know what gets us going. I think that’s a really great, positive thing.”
The Chargers also got 14 points from Kaylee Hunter and 9 points from Mia Johnson, while Samantha Dalueg had 15 rebounds and Ella Schlei had 10 rebounds.
Sleepy Eye (10-2, 5-2) was led by Kadence Hesse, who had 20 points, 11 rebounds, four steals and four assists. Brea Mertz had 17 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and three blocks for the Indians.
The Indians were without starter Kaydince Thoms for the game. Cadence Okerman, stepping in for Thoms, finished the game with 5 points before leaving with an injury.
MVL took an early 6-0 lead after layups from Schlei, Hunter and Johnson before Sleepy Eye ended the run with an and-one from Okerman.
After a 13-foot jumper from Riederer gave MVL a 13-9 lead, Sleepy Eye went on a run and grabbed its first lead of the game after Hesse found Brooklyn Moldan for a bucket inside.
Neither team was able to grab much of a lead the rest of the half until Hunter drained a 3 with 1:51 on the clock to put the Chargers ahead 31-24.
Sleepy Eye got the last points of the half after a charging call on Hesse was overturned to a shooting foul. Hesse then sank both free throws to have Sleepy Eye down 31-28 at halftime.
Mertz scored on a layup to start the second half and have the Indians down a point, but that was the closest they’d get from there out.
The Chargers led by as much as 14 in the second half.
As for Riederer’s triple-double effort, she was just glad it led to a win.
“Anything I can do for the team to get the win in the end is what my goal is,” she said.
MVL is at Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Friday, while Sleepy Eye hosts New Ulm Cathedral on Thursday.
