NEW ULM — New Ulm Cathedral recovered nicely from its loss to Springfield the day before to down Tri-City United 5-2 on Tuesday in a nonconference softball game at Harman Park.

Cathedral pitcher Kiah Helget encountered a rough start. In the top of the first inning, TCU got a pair of runners on base by an error and a walk. A single scored two runs, giving the Titans a 2-0 lead.

Sarah Mohr answered for the Greyhounds with a single in the bottom of the first inning. Mohr scored when Helget popped out to left field, making it 2-1 TCU.

Helget settled down and she kept TCU’s hitters off balance for the remainder of the contest. She struck out seven batters, got five batters to fly out and she was able to get six batters to ground out. The defense behind Helget was solid getting batters out when they did hit the ball.

Emily Guggisberg hit an infield single in the bottom of the third inning. Lily Brennan hit a double. Helget’s double brought in Guggisberg and Brennan to give Cathedral a 3-2 lead.

With two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning, Jenna Hotovec singled to left-center field. She scored later on a TCU error for a 4-2 Greyhound lead. Guggisberg reached on an error to continue the rally. Helget’s bunt single scored Guggisberg for the final score.

Cathedral (12-1, 11-1) will travel to face Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Friday in a doubleheader.
