Balge, McGuire to present recital Sunday

MANKATO — Pianist Bethel Balge and violinist Peter McGuire (right) will present a recital of Mozart, Brahms and Franck on Sunday, Oct. 6, at 4 p.m., in Trinity Chapel at Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato. A $10 donation is suggested at the door.

Immanuel Lutheran Pork Chop Dinner set

COURTLAND — The Immanuel Lutheran School (ILS) Parent-Teacher League (PTL) invites the public to its 40th Annual Pork Chop Dinner from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 6 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, three miles east of Courtland on County Road 25. A silent auction will also be held during the dinner.

The pork chop dinner — featuring secret recipe pork chops — includes a 1-chop meal for $10 or 2-chop meal for $12. The meal also includes a baked potato or potato chips, corn, coleslaw, dinner roll, dessert and milk or coffee. A hotdog meal is available for $3. This is the largest fundraiser of the school year.

The ILS PTL joins parents and teachers together working to benefit many aspects of Immanuel Lutheran School, a nationally accredited Christian day school supported by Immanuel Lutheran Church (Missouri Synod) in rural Courtland since 1864. ECFE hosting Katy Smith talk on parenting

New Ulm’s Early Childhood Family Education and Eagles Preschool Programs will host “A Community Conversation About What Kids Need to Succeed” with Katy Smith, Licensed Parent Educator and 2011 MN Teacher of the Year.

The presentation will held 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 7, at the New Ulm Middle School, Room 228E (414 S Payne St)

Admission is free, thanks to a grant from the Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation.

‘Mama Mia!’ trip to Chanhassen Dinner

NEW ULM — New Ulm Community Educuation is organizing a bus trip to the Chanhassen Dinner Theater on Saturday Nov. 23 for the matinee show of “Mama Mia.” Lunch is at 11 a.m. and the show at 1 p.m.

Registration deadline is Oct. 20, 2019. The charter bus and ticket are $96. The bus will leave at 8:45 a.m. from the Middle School Parking Lot on South Garden Street.

Norwegian Smorgasbord in Hanska Sunday

HANSKA — A traditional Norwegian Smorgasbord will be served from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 6 at Nora Unitarian Universalist Church in Hanska. Norwegian foods on the menu include herring, tongue, Norwegian meatballs, sot suppe, romme grot, rice pudding, lefse, flatbread, rosettes, krumkake, and sandbakkels. Additionally, fresh relishes, ham, turkey, mashed potatoes, glazed carrots, and cookies are served.

A Country Store with baked goods and hand crafted items opens at 10 a.m. The church service begins at 10:30 a.m. Meal cost is $16 for adults, $7 for ages 6 thru 12, and free to children 5 years and younger. Take-out meals are available.

Nora Church is located one mile east of Hanska off Highway 257. The Jorgenson Memorial Museum, a collection of pioneer and immigrant artifacts, will also be open for visitors.
