SLEEPY EYE — Fifth-seeded New Ulm Cathedral kept its season alive with a 3-1 victory over seventh-seeded Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s Saturday in the elimination bracket of the Section 2A Baseball Tournament on Saturday.

Josh Forstner earned the win for Cathedral, allowing one hit and one walk in three innings of work. Ryler Collins made the start, striking out two and allowing one run on three hits. At the plate for the Greyhounds, Alex Portner was 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored, while Lane Ruch and Elijah Rieser each had a hit and a run scored.

Landry Folkens took the loss for St. Mary’s, striking out four and allowing three earned runs on five hits and four walks. Tyler Mathiowetz pitched two innings, allowing one walk. At the plate for the Knights, Jack Windschitl was 2 for 3, while Mason Mathiowetz and Folkens each had a hit.

Rieser scored the opening run of the game, coming home on a passed ball in the second inning. St. Mary’s tied it up as Folkens singled, then he took to second on a groundout put into play by Mason Mathiowetz, then took third on a wild pitch. Finally, he scored on another wild pitch to tie the game at 1.

Neither team scored in the third or the fourth, but Ruch doubled to open the fifth inning for the Greyhounds. Portner brought him home with a single to break the tie, then a steal and a wild pitch put Portner on third. A sacrifice fly by Evan Blekestad completed Portner’s trip around the bases for a 3-1 lead. Forstner and the Cathedral defense allowed just one baserunner for the remainder of the game – a single by Windschitl – to take home the win.
