MVL/NUC girls win section, punch several state tickets
Chargers girls dominate 100 hurdles, boys 4x200 relay team sets record

JANESVILLE — The power of prayer worked wonders for Minnesota Valley Lutheran/New Ulm Cathedral sophomore Kamryn Davey and junior Avery Freier at the Section 2A Track and Field meet Saturday.
Davey and Freier finished first and second in the 100 meter hurdles finals and hugged each other. Davey was clocked in 16 seconds, Freier 16.34 seconds, earning state meet spots.
“We finished first and second in most all our meets. We prayed a lot and psyched each other up for the meets. We coach each other at practice. We believe we can win,” said Davey.
She also won the girls triple jump at 35-11.75. Olivia Hammer of MVL-NUC was second, earning a state meet spot at 35-04.5. Raegan Tiegs of MVL finished fifth.
The Charger girls won the Section 2A team title with 87 points. St. Clair/Immanuel Lutheran was second with 80 points. River Valley had 42 points, Sibley East 38, Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial Area/Nicollet 32, GFW 22.

LCWMA/N won the boys meet with 93.5 points. Maple River had 90.5 points, Sibley East had 62, MVL/NUC 36, River Valley 21, GFW 9.
The MVL/NUC boys 4×200 relay team of Ben Riesgraf, John Hoffman, Oliver Schuch and Levi Johnson finished second to Maple River but set a new school record of 1:31.52. The former record of 1:32.35 was set in 2024.
“We did a lot of high knee lifts in practice,” said Hoffman.
“We ran fast,” said Johnson.
Hoffman finished third in the 200 dash. McCoy Marti and Parker Kuehn of River Valley were fourth and fifth.

LCWMA/N finished third in 1:32.35, River Valley fourth and GFW fifth.
Drew Turgeon, an LCWMA/N senior, won the shot put in 56-11.5 and discus at 181-01. He finished sixth in discus at the state meet last year.
Turgeon said he liked the weather.
“I’ve been working hard, feeling good,” he said.
Turgeon said he plans to attend Minnesota State University, Mankato next fall to compete in track and study electrical engineering.

River Valley sophomore Marley Hewitt won the 400 dash in 59.46.
“I was a little concerned in the first half of the race but told myself, I’ve been here before and I know how to run it,” said Hewitt. “I believed I could finish strong and I’m happy I did pick it up the last 200 meters. I really dug hard the last 100 meters. I kept my head up, like my coach told me to do. It was a fun race.”
Hewitt earned a state meet spot finishing second in the 200 dash. Violet Hammer of MVL/NUC was fifth.
Hewitt finished eighth in the state 400 finals last year with a time of 58.4.
Sibley East sophomore Gage Horstman won the boys 800 in 2:03.17 to earn a state berth.

“It was got tactical with the wind coming down the home stretch. I made my move with 300 meters left,” he said. “I love running. Winning a big race like this is really fun. Lots of adrenaline, even though it’s really hot out. I prefer cool weather to run distance events.”
Sibley East Senior Aiden McCue finished second in the boys 100-meter hurdles by a tenth of a second, earning a state meet spot.
Emily Brown, a senior at MVL/NUC, finished third in the girls 100 meters. Kinley Bruns of GFW was eighth.
Parker Kuehn of River Valley was sixth in the boys 100 meters. Levi Johnson of MVL/NUC was seventh.
The Sibley East girls 4×800 relay team of Biron, Bauer, Ballalatak and Gardiner earned a state meet spot, finishing second in 9:58.39. River Valley was third, MVL/NUC was sixth.
The Sibley East boys 4×800 relay team of Krueger, Christeson, Alejandro and Horstman finished second in 8:33.53, earning a state meet spot.
Terrek Jenniges of Sibley East finished first in the boys 100-, 200- and 400-meter wheelchair events.
The Sibley East girls 4×200-relay team finished sixth. LCWMA/N was seventh.
Madyson Steele of GFW finished sixth in the girls 1600 in 5:38.11, a season best.
Julio Alejandro of Sibley East finished fifth in the boys 1600 in 4:46.95. Dylan Dewitt of River Valley was 10th in 4:58.84.
The Sibley East girls 4×100 relay team of Odenthal, Eccles, Mehlhop and Ott finished third in 50.87, two tenths of a second over the state qualifying time. The MVL/NUC team of Brown, Davey, Freier and Hammer was fourth.
The GFW boys 4×100 relay team of Mattes, Swenson, Miller and Ruiz was fourth in 46.12.
Henry Oscarson of LCWMA/N was fifth in the boys 400 in 53.5.
Emily Brown of MVL earned a state meet spot, finishing second in the girls 300-meter hurdles. Katie Thram of River Valley was third, Freier of MVL/NUC fourth.
Aiden Moeller of LCWMA/N won the boys 300 hurdles in 40.77. Tucker Kohls of MVL-NUC was thid in 41:52. Cameron Moore of River Valley was fifth.
Silvana Ruiz of GFW earned a state meet spot, finishing second in the girls 800 in 2:21.0, re-setting her own school record. Ruby Ballalatdak was fifth, Jaci Jordan of LCWMA/N was sixth, Freier was eighth.
Paige Gardiner of Sibley East was fourth in the girls 3,200 in 12:49.28.
River Valley’s Maher, Thram, Dauer and Hewitt finished fourth and MVL/NUC’s Wendinger, Peters, Freier and Hammer were fifth in the girls 4×400 relay race.
LCWMA/N’s Schubbe, Moeller, Dudgeon and Rodman won the boys 4×400 relay in 3:31.50. Sibley East finished sixth and MVL/NUC eighth.
GFW sophomore Annie Wersal earned a state meet trip, finishing second in the discus at 123-03. Jennarae Bates of MVL was seventh at 100-05. Matilda Carleton of LCWMA/N was eighth at 95-02.
The GFW boys 4×100 relay team of Regie Mattes, Garrett Stegeman, Brayden Miller and Chris Ruiz finished fourth in 45:69, their best time of the year.
The GFW 4×200 relay team of Stegeman, Owen Swenson, Cole Jacobson and Ruiz finished fifth in 1:35.0, their best time of the year.
Willow Casey of LCWMA/N won the girls shot put at 36-02. Bates was third at 34.005. Wersal finished seventh at 33 feet. Avery Hahn of MVL/NUC was eighth at 31-08.
Lauren Smit finished third in the girls high jump at 4-11.
Jacksen Pomplun of Sibley East won a state meet spot, finishing second in the high jump at six feet.
Kyleigh Schultz of LCWMA/N was sixth in the pole vault at 8-08. Mollie Berdan of MVL/NUC was seventh at 8-08.
Jacob Miller of LCWMA/N won the boys pole vault at 12-10. Levi Freyberg of LCWMA/N was third at 12-10.
Emme Eccles of Sibley East finished third in the long jump at 16-09.75. Hewitt of River Valley was sixth at 16-02.
Braxton Dudgeon of LCWMA/N finished second in the boys long jump at 21-04, earning a state meet spot. Aiden McCue of Sibley East and Riddick Schubbe of LCWMA/N also qualified for the state meet at 21-02 and 21-01.75 respectively. Jacksen Pomplun of Sibley East placed fifth and Parker Kuehn of River Valley ninth.
Dudgeon won the boys triple jump at 44-00.5. Aiden McCue of Sibley East was second at 43-07. Quinten Forst of MVL/NUC was fifth at 39-09.75. Oliver Schuch of MVL/NUC was seventh at 38-10.5.
Emmanuel Edwards of MVL/NUC was eighth in the discus at 131-01.
Athletes who placed in the top two individual events qualified for the state tournament, which begins Thursday at Hamline University, along with the top relay teams. State qualifying standard times and distances also awarded state spots.
