New Ulm eliminated from state tourney by Buckman
BELLE PLAINE — The New Ulm Brewers fell in the ninth inning 6-4 to the Buckman Billygoats in the third round of the Class C Minnesota State Amateur Baseball Tournament Saturday.
Mark Schommer took the loss for the Brewers, giving up four runs, one earned, on three hits and two walks in 2 1/3 innings. Ethan Stade made the start for New Ulm, going 122 pitches deep and allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits with seven strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings. At the plate for New Ulm, Hunter Ranweiler and Ayden Jensen each had two hits and an RBI, while Wade French was 2 for 4. Andrew Peters had a hit, a run scored and an RBI.
The Billygoats opened the scoring in the third with Lane Girtz singling to score a run. Andrew Rueckert singled in the fourth for Buckman to drive in another run and make it a 2-0 game.
Peters got the Brewers on the board with a triple to score Trevor Nissen, then Peters scored on a single by Jensen to tie the game. Buckman retook the lead in the top of the ninth, scoring three runs on three hits, a walk and an error to take a 6-2 lead. Ranweiler singled in the bottom of the ninth to score Jensen and Zach Hoffmann put a ball into play that scored Ranweiler, but the New Ulm effort was cut short on a groundout on the next play, ending the game.
New Ulm finishes its season with a 28-5 record.
