Longhorns battle back, beat Indians

SLEEPY EYE — The Stark Longhorns came back to beat the Sleepy Eye Indians 10-6 on Wednesday night in a Tomahawk East League amateur baseball game.

The Longhorns trailed 3-1 after five innings but got five runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to pull away.

David Surprenant was 2 for 2 with two doubles and three RBIs to lead the Longhorns at the plate, while Arian Saenz was 2 for 4 with a double and Nick Labat was 2 for 5 with an RBI. Adam Sellner was 1 for 2 with a double and two RBIs, while Talan Helget was 1 for 4 with a double and two RBIs.

Right-hander Dylan Klein got the pitching win in four innings of relief of Sellner, allowing four hits and one walk for three earned runs while striking out three. The lefty Sellner went five innings and gave up seven hits and a walk for three runs, two earned, while striking out seven.

Matt Mielke was 3 for 5 with two doubles and an RBI to lead the Indians, while Tyler Mathiowetz was 2 for 4 with a triple and Jon Petermann was 2 for 5 with an RBI. Luke Mielke added a two-run homer.

Nick Mielke took the pitching loss in 5 1/3 innings of work, allowing nine hits and two walks for six runs, five earned, while striking out one.

Petermann’s single scored Kaleb Butenhoff to give the Indians a 1-0 lead in the third, but Sellner doubled in Saenz in the fourth to tie the game. Two fielder’s choices off the bats of Luke Mielke and Nick Mielke allowed the Indians to take a 3-1 lead in the fifth.

A bases-loaded walk to Sellner got Stark a run back in the five-run sixth inning before a fielder’s choice groundout by Klein tied the game. A two-run double by Helget made it 5-3 Stark before Surprenant doubled to left to make it 6-3.

Surprenant’s second double of the night came in the seventh that scored two more runs for an 8-3 Stark lead. Luke Mielke got the Indians a pair of runs back in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run homer to left.

Matt Mielke doubled to right in the bottom of the eighth to have Sleepy Eye down just 8-6, but Stark added two more runs in the ninth on a Labat single and a wild pitch to score Surprenant.

Klein walked Tyler Mathiowetz to begin the bottom of the ninth, but he forced a pair of flyouts and a groundout to end the game with the win.

Stark moved to 4-5 in the TEL with the win, while Sleepy Eye dropped to 2-6 in TEL play. Stark hosts Leavenworth in a TEL game at 5 p.m. Sunday, while Sleepy Eye hosts Searles on Friday night in TEL action.
