Mavericks defeat Cal State San Marcos in Final Four game

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — The Minnesota State Mavericks are one win away from a National Championship.

The Mavericks defeated California State University San Marcos 70-68 in the NCAA DII Women’s Basketball Championship Semifinals at St. Joseph Civic Center Wednesday night.

Minnesota State will play Texas Woman’s University for the National Championship at 7 p.m. Friday night.

The Mavericks were led by Natalie Bremer with 29 points, nine rebounds and two steals. Emily Herzberg added 13 points, seven rebounds and three steals, while Joey Batt had 13 points and four steals.

The Cougars were led by Charity Gallegos’s 20 points, five assists and four rebounds.

Two missed free throws by Cal St. San Marcos’s Malia Mastora with 22 seconds left gave the Mavericks a chance to take the lead. With the score tied at 68 and five seconds left on the clock, Herzberg ran a give-and-go with Bremer and scored a game-winning layup for the Mavericks as time expired. Batt knocked away the inbound pass to seal the victory for Minnesota State.
