Greyhounds race by Thunderbirds for doubleheader sweep

NEW ULM — New Ulm Cathedral used a pair of big runs in the first inning of both games of a doubleheader to sweep Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 12-0 and 16-4 in a Tomahawk Conference baseball doubleheader.

Both games were stopped after five innings because of the 10-riun lead rule.

“We jumped on them in the first inning of both games right away,” Cathedral head baseball coach Alan Woitas said. “We put up some big numbers — we were engaged from the get-go.”

The Greyhounds put up 23 hits in the doubleheader sweep while allowing just seven hits in the two games.

Colin Anderson got the win in the opener, going three innings and allowing one hit — that being a leadoff double to start the game to Owen Swenson, who was stranded there as Anderson fanned the side for three of his eight strikeouts in the game.

Matt Seidl, Levi Franta and Anderson each had two hits, with Franta and Elliott Schabert each driving in two runs. Anderson had three RBIs.

The Greyhounds, who play at Sleepy Eye on Monday, sent 10 batters to the plate and scored six runs.

Singles from Jake Finstad and Seidl, a double from Franta and singles from Anderson and Caleb Forstner made it 4-0. Schabert’s double had Cathedral up 6-0.

Two more runs came across for the Greyhounds in the second on a Franta double and a wild pitch.

Cathedral made it 11-0 in the third on an Anderson single and an error, with the Greyhounds adding a single run in the bottom of the fourth on an error.

In Game 2, Finstad, Anderson, Forstner and Logan Mielke each had two hits. Brock Wellmann and Schabert each had three RBIs.

Caleb Forstner got the win for Cathedral, going four innings and allowing one run and three hits.

Lucas Uecker-Hamre took the loss for the Thunderbirds. He went 1 2/3 innings and was charged with nine runs on seven hits.

Cathedral plated seven runs in the first inning and then added two more in the second. The Greyhounds capped the third inning with another seven runs, highlighted by a two-run home run from Joey Schugel.

“That was his first career home run,” Woitas said, “Levi has our other home run this season, but Joey hit that ball well.”

Woitas said that the doubleheader sweep was a case of all of the Greyhounds batters putting the bat on the ball.

“One through nine we put good barrels on the balls throughout the day,” Woitas said. “And our pitchers threw strikes and we made good plays behind them and we ran the bases well.”

It was also a doubleheader that saw the Greyhounds able to get a lot of players in the games.

“We were able to get 20 players in the games, so it was fun to see those guys get in to play.”

GFW falls to 2-9 overall and 1-8 in the conference, while Cathedral improves to 7-2 overall and 6-2 in conference play.
