ARLINGTON — It took overtime to do it, but sixth-seeded Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop pulled off its second upset of the Section 2A, North Subsection Boys Basketball Tournament with a 65-62 OT win over second-seeded Sleepy Eye on Thursday night.
With a talent-stacked North Subsection, it may be unfair to label GFW’s last two wins as upsets, but the Thunderbirds will ride its underdog status all the way to the North Subsection title game Monday night after Thursday’s win over the Indians.
The Thunderbirds (19-10) will take on fourth-seeded Lester Prairie at 6 p.m. Monday at Gustavus Adolphus College, with the winner advancing to the section finals. Lester Prairie knocked off top-seeded Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s earlier Thursday.
GFW was led by Cole Jacobson’s 27 points, while Alex Johnson, Easton Taylor and Dominic Rose all each chipped in 9 points.
Sleepy Eye was led by Marcus Martinez’s 24 points, seven rebounds and four assists, while Landon Wendinger had 18 points, 13 rebounds and eight blocks. Isaac Lendt added 11 points, eight assists and seven rebounds for Sleepy Eye.
The Thunderbirds were fresh off an 83-66 win over third-seeded BOLD this past Tuesday and they weren’t finished taking down teams seeded above them.
But it took a little extra to pull this one out.
After GFW battled back in the second half and extended its lead to 45-38 on a free throw by Johnson, the Indians got a bucket by Wendinger and a pair of free throws and a 3-pointer by Martinez to tie it at 45-all.
GFW extended its lead to 52-45 on a 3 by Taylor, but the Indians again fought back to tie it at 55 after a putback by Robert Romberg. With GFW up 3 late, Lendt sank a 3 just before the buzzer to force overtime.
GFW took the first lead of OT and extended its lead to 4 with less than 25 seconds to play in OT. Lendt hit a bucket underneath with 4 seconds left, but GFW got another late free throw by Taylor to help clinch the win.
The Indians were without starting guard Brayden Heiderscheidt, who was in a knee brace for Thursday’s game, but they didn’t seem to let it slow them down early in the game as they took a 28-15 lead after back-to-back buckets by Wendinger. GFW got a 9-0 run capped off on a floater by Jacobson, but Martinez beat the halftime buzzer with a big 3 to give the Indians a 31-24 lead at the half.
GFW started the second half with 3s by Johnson and Taylor to trail 31-30. Martinez hit a pair of free throws to give the Indians a 33-30 lead, but GFW got an and-one from Johnson to tie the game up. GFW never led by more than 7 after that before Lendt tied it to force OT.
Sleepy Eye ends its season with a 19-9 record.
