Area roundup: GFW knocks off third-seeded BOLD in 2A playoffs

GFW 83, BOLD 66

BIRD ISLAND — No. 6-seeded Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop earned a trip to the Section 2A, North Subsection boys basketball semifinals at the expense of No. 3-seeded BOLD on Tuesday night as the Thunderbirds picked up an 83-66 win.

The Thunderbirds, now 18-10 on the season, will take on second-seeded Sleepy Eye at 7:45 p.m. Thursday at Sibley East High School.

The Warriors end their season with a 14-13 mark.

GFW avenged an 86-80 loss in Winthrop to BOLD on Jan. 4 with Tuesday’s playoff win.

Cole Jacobson led GFW with 25 points, while Dominic Rose had 23 and Alex Johnson had 21. Ashton Buboltz and Easton Taylor each chipped in 6 points for the Thunderbirds.

BOLD was led by Jack Gross’s 21 points, while Mav Kaufenberg added 11.

Sleepy Eye 74, ACGC 64

SLEEPY EYE — Second-seeded Sleepy Eye held off seventh-seeded Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City on Tuesday night with a 76-64 win in the North Subsection, Section 2A Boys Basketball Tournament.

Sleepy Eye, now 19-8 on the season, will take on sixth-seeded Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop at 7:45 p.m. Thursday at Sibley East High School in a North Subsection semifinals game.

GFW and Sleepy Eye split a pair of regular-season games this season.

Marcus Martinez led Sleepy Eye with 25 points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals, while Eric Lozano had 17 points. Landon Wendinger also had a triple double for Sleepy Eye with 13 points, 18 rebounds and 10 blocks, while Isaac Lendt had 16 points and seven assists.

Springfield 98,

Madelia 67

SPRINGFIELD — Second-seeded Springfield downed seventh-seeded Madelia 98-67 on Tuesday night in a Section 2A, South Subsection boys basketball playoff game.

Noah Vogel led the Tigers (20-7) in the win with 25 points and six rebounds, while Bryan Buerkle added 22 points, six rebounds and three steals and Ben Potter had 19 points and three steals. Also for the Tigers, Aiden Moriarty added 8 points.

Springfield will now take on sixth-seeded Alden-Conger at 7:45 p.m. on Thursday at St. Peter High School in the South Subsection semifinals.

Madelia was led by Kaydon Firchau and Josiah DeMaris, who each had 16 points. Hayden Jones added 15 points for the Blackhawks, while Kyle Pietsch added 12.

Madelia ends its season with a 10-17 mark.

Lester Prairie 68,

Cedar Mountain 59

LESTER PRAIRIE — Fourth-seeded Lester Prairie took down fifth-seeded Cedar Mountain 68-59 on Tuesday night in a Section 2A, North Subsection boys basketball playoff game.

The Cougars, who end their season with a 15-12 mark, were led by Blake Steffl’s 26 points and four assists, while Blake Schueller added 15 points and 14 rebounds. Branndon Pendleton added 8 points, six assists and four rebounds also for Cedar Mountain.
