TEL roundup: Brewers bash Cardinals in romp

NEW ULM 18, FAIRFAX 1 (7 INNINGS)

NEW ULM — The New Ulm Brewers racked up 16 hits on the way to an 18-1 rout of the Fairfax Cardinals in a Tomahawk East League amateur baseball game Wednesday night at Mueller Park.

Tate Becker led the Brewers’ hit parade, going 3 for 5 with a triple, a double and four RBIs, while Ayden Jensen was 3 for 4 with two triples, three RBIs and three runs scored. Evan Thompson also went 2 for 2 with two doubles and two RBIs for the Brewers, while Cole Ranweiler was 2 for 2 with three RBIs and three runs scored, JT Hoffmann was 2 for 2 with a triple, three walks and three runs scored ane Sam Keckeisen was 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs.

Keckeisen got the win in five innings of work, allowing four hits and one walk for one unearned run while striking out three. Blaine Olson pitched two strong innings also for New Ulm, allowing no hits or walks while striking out four.

Luke Bastian was 1 for 3 with the lone RBI of the game for Fairfax on a double. Owen Swenson took the loss in two innings, allowing six hits and three walks for 11 earned runs.

The Brewers scored 13 unanswered runs before Fairfax got on the board in the fourth with Bastian’s double to left to score Jacob Hildebrandt, who reached on a one-out error.

Before that, New Ulm saw five runs cross the plate in the first, with a two-run double by Becker, a two-run triple by Jensen and an RBI groundout by Noel Davila scoring the runs. In the second, New Ulm scored six runs, with a Keckeisen’s two-run double, a Becker RBI triple and another Jensen triple to score a run highlighting the inning.

Both teams committed just one error in the game.

New Ulm moved to the top of the TEL with the win and are now 9-1 in league play. Fairfax dropped to 2-9 in the TEL.

GIBBON 8, SPRINGFIELD 7 (10 INNINGS)

SPRINGFIELD — The Gibbon Reds won an extra-inning battle with the Springfield Tigers on Wednesday night, winning 8-7 in 10 innings of a Tomahawk East League amateur baseball game.

Josh Wasmund’s sac fly to left scored Devon Schwarzrock to give the Reds the 8-7 lead in the 10th. Springfield got a runner on in the bottom of the 10th on an error, but reliever Layton Hamre got a groundout and flyout to end the game.

Hamre got the win in three innings of work, allowing three hits and two walks for two earned runs. Dominic Rose got the start and went five innings, allowing four hits and six walks for five runs, four earned, while fanning five.

Rose also went 2 for 5 with a double and five RBIs to lead the Reds at the plate, while Schwarzrock was 2 for 5 with a double and an RBI and Kyle Mauer was 2 for 4 with an RBI.

Brandon Wilhelmi took the loss in 3 1/3 innings of relief, allowing three hits and two walks for one earned run while striking out three. Jordan Milbrath got the start and went 5 2/3 innings, allowing three hits and seven walks for six earned runs while striking out 12. Noah Neperman pitched one inning in relief and allowed three hits and two walks for one earned run while striking out two.

The Tigers were led at the plate by Jacob Poehler, who was 4 for 5 with two doubles and two RBIs, while Russell Beers was 2 for 4 with two RBIs.

Gibbon moved to 5-5 in the TEL with the win, while Springfield dropped to 8-3 in league play.
