Becker lifts Madelia by VFW Gold

Madelia’s Tate Becker delivers a pitch in a Junior Upper Midwest Classic baseball game against New Ulm VFW Gold Friday at Johnson Park.

NEW ULM — Coming into their first Junior Upper Midwest Classic, there was not a lot known about the Madelia VFW team.

But after their first two games in the tournament, that has changed.

After a 3-2 win over Excelsior in their first game on Friday, Madelia earned its second win of the day.

Tate Becker scattered five New Ulm VFW Gold hits Friday night and added a three-hit performance at the plate as Madelia downed VFW Gold 4-1 at Johnson Park.

Becker struck out nine and walked just one.

Kaden Peterson took the loss for New Ulm.

Becker and Jake Lehman each had three hits for Madelia. Chase Osborne added two hits,

Lehman drove in two runs.

Kaden Peterson had a double for New Ulm.

“Tate Becker had a really good game and we played as good behind him and in front of him as I have seen us,” Madelia coach Mike Anderson said. “Our catcher [Eric Anderson] made some great plays behind the plate and your team is only as good as you are behind the plate.”

Or as good as you are in front of it.

After allowing a run to New Ulm in the first inning, Becker allowed just two hits the rest of the way.

“When Tate throws strikes, he does not get hit,” Anderson said. “This is our tenth game of the summer and when he throws strikes — he does not get hit.”

New Ulm got its only run in the first on a Cody Serbus single.

Madelia tied the game in the second off of Peterson on an Osborne RBI single.

Madelia added two more runs in the second after two were out.

Becker singled and scored on a Tony Zaleski triple.

Zaleski then trotted home on a Jake Lehman double.

“Tate and Jake had big hits but the biggest for us was Tony’s triple,” Anderson said. “And Chase Osborne hitting in the eight hole for us — he had two hits now and two in our first game today.”

Madelia closed out their scoring in the fifth off of reliever Kolton Achman on a Lehman single.

“Thes kids love baseball,” Anderson said. “They play 507 baseball, they play Blizzard and they go to Arizona and play in the offseason. They just love baseball.”
