Area roundup: Cathedral softball sweeps Springfield

CATHEDRAL 8, SPRINGFIELD 2 (GAME 1)

CATHEDRAL 9, SPRINGFIELD 3 (GAME 2)

SPRINGFIELD — New Ulm Cathedral finished conference play undefeated after a 8-2 and 9-3 sweep of Springfield in a Tomahawk Division doubleheader on Thursday.

Jayde Altermatt earned the win in the circle in Game 1, striking out nine and allowing two runs on four hits in a complete game. At the plate for the Greyhounds, Altermatt was 3 for 4 with two RBIs, while Leah Wilson was 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Ava Schmid had a home run and three RBIs.

Regan Beadell took the loss for Springfield, striking out five and allowing eight runs on eight hits in seven innings. At the plate, Delayna Johnson was 2 for 3, while Kendall Krueger had a hit and an RBI.

Altermatt also earned the win in Game 2, striking out six and allowing three unearned runs on four hits in seven innings. At the plate, Wilson was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and three runs scored, while Brynn Wilfahrt was 2 for 4 with an RBI. Abbey Hillesheim added a 2 for 3 performance with a run scored.

Faye Williams took the loss in the second game, striking out four and allowing six earned runs on nine hits in six innings. At the plate for the Tigers, Krueger was 2 for 4 with an RBI, while Isabella Groebner had a hit, an RBI and a run scored.

Cathedral (15-2, 14-0) plays in a tournament at Wabasso on Saturday, while Springfield (9-10, 8-5) plays at Sleepy Eye on Monday.

SLEEPY EYE 7, ST. MARY’S 1 (GAME 1)

SLEEPY EYE, ST. MARY’S (GAME 2)

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye swept Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s 7-1 and 8-7 in a Tomahawk Division softball doubleheader on Thursday.

Taylor Berkner earned the win in Game 1 for Sleepy Eye, striking out six while allowing one unearned run on three hits. At the plate, Berkner was 4 for 4 with three RBIs, while Jaelynn Schauman was 3 for 4 with three runs scored. Jace Schauman was 2 for 5 with a home run, and Callie Evers was 3 for 4 with two RBIs.

Natalie Zarn took the loss for St. Mary’s, striking out six and allowing seven earned runs on 16 hits. At the plate, Eva Schweiss, Zarn and Rivers Helget each had a hit.

Berkner also took home the win in Game 2, striking out five and allowing five earned runs on eight hits. At the plate, M Walter was 2 for 3 with an RBI, while M Seifert and Kenley Jensen each had a hit and two RBIs.

Taylor Mathiowetz took the loss for St. Mary’s, striking out seven and allowing two earned runs on five hits. At the plate, Helget was 3 for 4 with an RBI, while Sydney Tauer was 2 for 5 with a home run and four RBIs.

Sleepy Eye (13-5, 10-3) hosts Springfield on Monday, while St. Mary’s (7-10, 6-7) hosts Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther on Monday.

ST. CLAIR/LOYOA 10, MADELIA 7

MADELIA — St. Clair/Loyola defeated Madelia 10-7 in a nonconference softball game on Thursday.

Emily Jacobs took the loss for the Blackhawks, striking out three and allowing 10 unearned runs on seven hits. At the plate, Lauryn Grev and Emma Christensen each had two hits, while Jacobs had two RBIs. Makayla Sorenson added a hit and an RBI.

Madelia (5-13) hosts Martin County West on Friday.

CLEVELAND 17, NICOLLET 0 (4 innings)

CLEVELAND — Cleveland rolled Nicollet 17-0 in four innings in a Valley Division softball game on Thursday.

Brielle Osborne took the loss, striking out one and allowing eight earned runs on 11 hits in two innings of work. At the plate, Chloe Kachelmeier, Zoie Rengstorf and Taylor Wilking were both 1 for 2.

Nicollet (13-6, 5-4) plays at New Ulm Cathedral on Monday.

PREP BASEBALL

NEW ULM 17, WORTHINGTON 5

WORTHINGTON — New Ulm cruised to a 17-5 victory over Worthington in a Big South Conference baseball game on Thursday.

Mitchell Hopp earned the win for the Eagles, striking out seven and allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits in four innings. Owen Castleman pitched three innings, striking out six and allowing one earned run on four hits. At the plate, Kyle Albrecht was 4 for 4 with two RBIs, while Zach Hubbard was 3 for 5 with three RBIs. Tanner Backer was 3 for 5 with two RBIs, while Castleman was 2 for 6 with four RBIs. Candon Briggs had two hits and an RBI, and Levi Hopp and Hunter Larson each added two hits. Carson Boe had a home run and two RBIs.

New Ulm (11-3) plays at Mankato West on Saturday.

GFW 19, BLHS 3 (5 INNINGS, GAME 1)

BLHS 10, GFW 3 (GAME 2)

FAIRFAX — Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop won Game 1 of a Tomahawk Division doubleheader against Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart 19-3 in five innings but fell 10-3 in Game 2 on Thursday.

Owen Swenson earned the win in Game 1, striking out four and allowing three runs on five hits. At the plate, Kaden Rieke was 5 for 5 with five RBIs and four runs scored, while Cole Kemkes was 2 for 3 with four RBIs. Swenson was 3 for 5, and Luke Bastian had two hits and two RBIs with four runs scored.

Kemkes took the loss in Game 2, striking out four and allowing four runs on eight hits in four innings. At the plate, Bastian was 2 for 4 with an RBI.

GFW (5-10, 5-8) hosts Minnesota Valley Lutheran on Friday.

PREP GOLF

NEW ULM BOYS WIN AT REDWOOD FALLS GC

REDWOOD FALLS — The New Ulm boys golf team won an 18-hole prep golf quad on Thursday at Redwood Falls Golf Club, winning with a score of 307.

Redwood Valley took second (344), while Fairmont took third (360) and St. Peter took fourth (364).

The Eagles were led by co-medalists Ethan Schmidt and Mason Buegler, who each carded a 76. New Ulm also took the third- and fourth-place boys spots on the leaderboard as Brandt Munson shot a 77 and Brayden Wendinger shot a 78. New Ulm also had Colton Anderson and Asher Wendinger place in the top 10, with Anderson carding an 82 to tie for fifth and Asher Wendinger carding an 84 for eighth.

The girls meet was won by Redwood Valley (397), followed by Fairmont (399) and St. Peter (406). The New Ulm girls team was incomplete.

Despite being incomplete, New Ulm had the girls medalist in the meet as Lillian Kral shot an 87 for first. Brogan Thordson and Lydia Osborne shot a 111 and 112, respectively, for 16th and 17th place.

CEDAR MOUNTAIN BOYS 173, BLHS 203

CEDAR MOUNTAIN GIRLS 222, BLHS INC.

FAIRFAX — The Cedar Mountain boys golf team won a Tomahawk Division golf meet at the Mayflower Golf Club on Thursday, defeating Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart 173-203.

The Cedar Mountain girls shot a 222, while the BLHS girls team was incomplete.

The boys medalist was Cedar Mountain’s Carson Schiller, while teammates Thomas Dahmes and Owen Dittbenner were runners-up with 45s. Cedar Mountain’s Hank Heiling and BLHS’s Parker Rath shot 46s to tie for fifth, while BLHS’s Chet Macik shot a 47 for sixth.

The girls medalist was Cedar Mountain’s Bailey Woodford, who shot a 51, while BLHS’s lone girls golfer Ava Ahlbrecht shot a 52 for second. Cedar Mountain’s Jaylyn Welter and Claire Sherman shot 56s to tie for third, while Cedar Mountain’s Jasmyn Wiese shot a 59 for fifth.
