Tigers sweep Greyhounds, win Tomahawk

NEW ULM — The Springfield Tigers earned the out-right Tomahawk Division baseball title Thursday when they swept New Ulm Cathedral 7-3 in the opener and then hung on for a 9-8 win in the nightcap.

In the opener, Madden Lendt picked up the mound win, going five innings and allowing three runs. All three Cathedral runs were unearned as the Tigers committed five errors in the game.

Ryler Collins took the loss for Cathedral. He was charged with five runs in five innings.

Adiel Trevino had two hits for the Tigers, with Ely Streich driving in three runs. Trevino added three RBIs.

The Greyhounds held a 3-2 lead going into the top of the fifth before the Tigers plated three runs.

A Lendt RBI single, a fielder’s choice and a Brecken Heiling single had the Tigers up 5-3.

Heiling’s two-run triple in the top of the seventh moved Springfield to a 7-3 lead.

In the nightcap, the Tigers held a comfortable 8-1 lead going into the sixth inning.

But the Greyhounds pushed five runs across in the sixth and two more in the seventh before falling.

Eli Heglund got the win for Springfield, going 5 1/3 innings and scattered two hits. Aiden Moriarty got the save.

Josh Forstner took the loss .

Moriarty, Trevino and Leo Hovland each had two hits for the Tigers, with Moriarty driving in two runs.

Evan Starke had two of the five Greyhounds’ hits in the game.

Ryler Collins had three RBIs with Starke and Henry Forst each driving in two runs.

Springfield had built a 8-1 lead after four innings.

But Cathedral climbed back with five runs in the sixth inning. The big hit was a two-run double from Forst that cut the lead to 8-6.

Springfield scored the eventual game-winning run in the top of the seventh on a Hovland squeeze bunt.

Cathedral scored twice in the top of the seventh on RBI singles from Collins and Starke.

Springfield (15-2, 13-1) is at Windom on Monday, while Cathedral (10-6, 8-4) hosts Minnesota Valley Lutheran Monday at Johnson Park.
