Section 2A softball roundup: Springfield stays alive, moves on to Tuesday

Springfield 5, MCW 0

NORTH MANKATO — After falling to top-seeded Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s to start the day, the fifth-seeded Springfield Tigers roared back against seventh-seeded Martin County West for a 5-0 win in a Section 2A Softball Tournament elimination bracket game.

The win moves the Tigers on to a 5 p.m. elimination bracket game against Cleveland on Tuesday at Caswell Park, with the winner of that game meeting New Ulm Cathedral that night for a section finals berth.

Jalivia Richert earned the complete-game shutout win for the Tigers, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out six. She also doubled and went 2 for 3 for the Tigers at the plate.

Brenna Pabst also doubled and drove in a pair of runs for Springfield, while Maddy Digmann doubled.

St. Mary’s 16, Springfield 6 (6 innings)

NORTH MANKATO — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s downed Springfield 16-6 on Saturday morning in a Section 2A Softball Tournament game at Caswell Park.

The win moved the Knights on to a semifinals game with New Ulm Cathedral later that afternoon, which the Knights also won to move on to the Section 2A finals on Thursday.

In the win over the Tigers, Alexa Pelzel was 3 for 4 with a home run and five RBIs to lead the Knights at the plate, while Bella Hoffmann was 3 for 5 with three RBIs. Lacey Mathiowetz also went 2 for 5 with an RBI for the Knights.

Mathiowetz got the win in six innings, allowing 10 hits and three walks for six runs while fanning eight.

Jalivia Richert took the loss in six innings, allowing eight earned runs on 13 hits and seven walks while striking out two. The Tigers were led at the plate by Brooklyn Sturm, who was 2 for 3 with a triple, a double and an RBI. Rachel Beadell, Maddy Digmann and Richert also each had two hits, with Digmann driving in two runs. Digmann and Beadell also each had a double.

Cathedral 5, Sleepy Eye 2

NORTH MANKATO — Second-seeded New Ulm Cathedral opened the day with a 5-2 win over sixth-seeded Sleepy Eye on Saturday in the Section 2A Softball Tournament at Caswell Park.

The win moved the Greyhounds on to a Section 2A semifinals game with St. Mary’s, with the Knights winning 6-4 to force the Greyhounds to an elimination bracket finals game on Tuesday.

The Greyhounds play the winner of Tuesday’s 5 p.m. elimination bracket game between Springfield and Cleveland.

In Cathedral’s win over Sleepy Eye, Jenna Hotovec was 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs, while Megan Haala was 1 for 3 with two RBIs and Alexa Hornick was 1 for 3 with an RBI. Megan Haala got the win in the circle in two innings, allowing one hit. Madelyn Haala pitched five innings and allowed three hits and two walks for two runs while striking out six.

Katelyn Tauer took the loss for Sleepy Eye in all seven innings, allowing five hits and a walk while striking out two. Brooke Arneson led the Indians at the plate with a home run, while Tauer and Jade Sellner each went 1 for 2 and Nora Coulson was 1 for 3 with an RBI.

The loss dropped the Indians to an elimination bracket game with Cleveland.

Cleveland 10, Sleepy Eye 7

NORTH MANKATO — Sleepy Eye came up short against fourth-seeded Cleveland on Saturday afternoon in a Section 2A Softball Tournament elimination bracket game at Caswell Park, being eliminated from the tournament as a result.

Nora Coulson was 2 for 4 with a run scored to lead the Indians in defeat, while Brooke Arneson was 1 for 3 with two RBIs and three runs scored and Paige Haala was 1 for 2 with a run scored and an RBI. Taylor Berkner and Lydia Helget each were 1 for 3 with an RBI, while Jade Sellner was 1 for 3 with a run scored.

The Indians finish their season with a 12-10 record.

Cleveland 7, Nicollet 5

NORTH MANKATO — Cleveland held off eighth-seeded Nicollet 7-5 on Saturday morning at Caswell Park to eliminate the Raiders from the Section 2A Softball Tournament.

Leah Bode took the loss for the Raiders in the circle, allowing eight hits and four walks for five earned runs while striking out five. She was also 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs at the plate, while Sam Kettner was 2 for 3 with three runs scored. Izzy Torgerson was 1 for 3 with two RBIs also for Nicollet, while Ellie Matter was 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored.

The Raiders end their season with an 8-12 record.

LCWM 6, TCU 2

Belle Plaine 6, LCWM 5

NORTH MANKATO — Fifth-seeded Lake Crystal defeated eighth-seeded Tri-City United 6-2 before falling to third-seeded Belle Plaine on Saturday at Caswell Park in the Section 2AA Softball Tournament.

The loss to Belle Plaine eliminated LCWM from the tournament and ended its season with an 18-6 mark.

In the win over TCU, Liv Harazin led the offense with three doubles, while Gillian Hanson homered. Avery Voges got the start and went two innings, allowing two hits and striking out four, while Nettie Parson pitched the final five and gave up four hits for two runs while fanning five.

In the loss to Belle Plaine, Rilee Penkert had three hits, while Addie Ahern and Grace Thorson each had home runs. Avery Voges allowed four hits and struck out eight in the circle.
