No-no in the snow

Coil no-hits Coyotes, Blackhawks win in 6

MADELIA — Through cold temperatures and periods of snow, Madelia’s Emma Coil didn’t let the weather cool her down in the circle or at the plate Friday afternoon.

Behind Coil’s no-hitter and game-ending double in the sixth, the Blackhawks cruised past Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda 10-0 at Madelia City Park in nonconference softball action.

Coil no-hit the Coyotes in Okabena last season, but this season she did it at home and in less-than-ideal conditions.

“It feels great because I didn’t really think we were going to play today,” Coil, who struck out 12 and walked two, said. “It means a lot to me that I can help out my team with defense as well.”

Coil also dropped a double into left just in front of the left fielder’s glove in the sixth inning to score Victoria Hemmingson from second and end the game early. Hemmingson ran for Corban Tatro, who doubled to lead off the bottom of the sixth.

Tatro went 2 for 4 with the double and added two RBIs, while Coil was 2 for 4 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs.

Alicia Lugo went 2 for 2 with an RBI and three runs scored also for Madelia, while Makayla Sorenson was 2 for 3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored.

Addysen Hendel pitched the first two innings for the Coyotes and took the loss, giving up five hits and a walk for four earned runs while striking out four.

Hendel was one of two players drawing walks for the Coyotes after walking in the first, while Katelyn Johnson drew a walk in the sixth. Kenley Wiener reached base in the fifth after being hit by a pitch.

With a combination of on-again, off-again rain, sleet and snow flurries throughout the day and temperatures in the upper 30s during the game, both teams had to play smart and safe.

“I hate to say, when I played for Cathedral way back in the day, I know I played in the snow before [laughs],” Madelia head coach Terri Baumgartner said. “But when I got down here and it was like that blizzard, squall thing going on, and I thought, ‘This is going to be interesting.’ But at one point I just said, ‘We have to do it. Let’s get our heads in the game, let’s just do it, get it done. The quicker we get done, the better.'”

Baumgartner was happy with the quick win, but she was happier to finish the game without any injuries.

The conditions were a challenge for Coil at first, but she adjusted nicely.

“Mentally it’s a little bit of a block at first,” Coil said. “The mound, it’s pretty bad, but you just have to push through it. Physically, it’s a little harder to pitch with the clay like that because you don’t have as much of a drive forward, but you just have to work through it and do your best.”

Sorenson scored the first run of the game for Madelia in the first inning after reaching on an error and later scoring on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Tatro.

With two outs in the bottom of the second, the bottom of the order got things started in a big way for Madelia as No. 8-hitter Madelyn Lehman singled, stole second and was singled in by Lugo for a 2-0 Madelia lead.

The highlight of the inning came off the bat of Coil, however, as she drove a hard grounder down the left field line that went out of play for an RBI double.

The Blackhawks scored six runs in that inning and held a 7-0 lead until grabbing another run in the third after Lugo scored on a wild pitch.

An RBI double to right-center by Sorenson gave the Blackhawks a 9-0 lead after five before Coil’s second double of the day ended the game in the sixth.

“The confidence for our team has skyrocketed since the first two games when we run-ruled, and then we kind of went down into a little bit of a slump,” Coil said. “But I feel like this game just built us back up as a team and as a whole. I hope we can keep this.”

Madelia, now 3-4 overall, is at Lake Crystal for a Valley Conference game on Tuesday.
