NEW ULM — New Ulm Eagles senior Brogan Thordson wasn’t going to let jitters get the better of her Monday during the season’s first Big South Conference, Black Division girls golf event.
After double-bogeying three of the first four holes at New Ulm Country Club, Thordson got her putter going and finished second overall on the day with a 44.
The girls medalist on the day was Marshall’s Dayton Webskowski, which wasn’t a big surprise as the senior Tigers golfer is a two-time state tournament golfer. Webskowski’s 43 on Monday to led the Tigers to a first-place team score of 199. While New Ulm took sixth with a 222 out of seven teams, the Eagles were playing without two key golfers in Lilly Kral and Chloe Kelley.
“I was very nervous, obviously, the first few holes, but once I kind of chilled out and realized that I honestly do better when I’m not so uptight and nervous about everything, it just kind of went my way,” Thordson said.
Worthington ended up taking second at the meet with a 200, followed by St. Peter (201), Tri-City United (211), Belle Plaine (214), New Ulm and Waseca (237).

Thordson said her drives worked for her throughout most of the meet, but how she played on the greens made the difference in the end.
“I definitely think my drives were pretty consistent through the nine holes and that’s not always the case,” Thordson said. “Then at the end there when I was getting those pars, my putt was just on, which definitely helped me knowing that once I got it onto the green, I could trust myself knowing that I have a chance to get par and even close to under par on Hole 9.”
Thordson finished with pars on Holes 5, 6, 8 and 9, just missing a birdie on the final hole.
Worthington’s Claire Meyer shot a 47 to take third individually, while St. Peter’s Charlotte Hagen and Belle Plaine’s Olivia Jeurissen shot 48s to tie for fourth.
New Ulm had two other seniors in action Monday, with Maddy Wellmann carding a 53 to take 17th and Lydia Osborne shooting a 62 for 34th. New Ulm also pulled up some JV golfers to help out in place of Kral and Kelley, with eighth-grader Eleanor Furth shooting a 63 for 35th and seventh-grader Kaybree Schwab turning in a 65 for 36th.
The Eagles had some trouble with the wind at times Monday and being without two key golfers, but Thordson is hopeful the team will continue to improve throughout the year.
“The wind definitely played a part with some, but I definitely have hope with the end of the year,” Thordson said. “Seeing how Lilly’s scores have really [improved] this year, and Maddy Wellmann, we’re definitely a more solid team than last year and we’ve definitely done better individually.”
