Mayer Lutheran 35, GFW 12

MAYER — Second-seeded Mayer Lutheran jumped out to an early 21-0 lead in the first half and never looked back on the way to a 35-12 win over third-seeded Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop in a Section 2A semifinals football game on Saturday night.

Garret Schmidt scored both of GFW’s touchdowns on runs of 5 and 4 yards and had a reception of 60 yards. Jacob Rose rushed for 42 yards on 11 carries also for GFW, while QB Dominic Rose completed 9 of 14 passes for for 208 yards. Justin Messner had two catches for 49 yards also for the Thunderbirds, while Rex Monson had two catches for 37 yards.

Schmidt led the GFW defense with 4 1/2 tackles and an interception, while Tristian Kruger added 4 1/2 tackles.

Mayer Lutheran moves on to meet top-seeded Lester Prairie in the Section 3A title game Friday at New Prague High School, while GFW ends its season with a 7-3 record.

Hancock 32,

Cedar Mountain 14

HANCOCK — Second-seeded Hancock topped third-seeded Cedar Mountain 32-14 on Saturday in a Section 2A, 9-man semifinals football playoff game.

Quarterback Cooper Freitag completed a pair of touchdown passes to Christian Belcher (31 yards and 10 yards) for Cedar Mountain’s touchdowns. Freitag completed 22 of 30 passes for 191 yards and also completed a 2-point conversion pass to Brannden Pendleton. Pendleton led the Cougars on the ground with four carries for 28 yards and caught eight passes for 28 yards, while Belcher finished with six catches for 115 yards and Maverick Weber had four catches for 18 yards.

Ryan Kevelin led the Cougars on defense qith 8 1/2 tackles, while Freitag had eight tackles, Belcher had 7 1/2 tackles and Easton Csordacsics had 4 1/2 tackles.

Hancock will meet top-seeded Renville County West on Friday night at Lakeview High School in the Section 2, 9-man finals, while Cedar Mountain finishes the season with a 7-3 record.

RCW 44, St. Mary’s 6

RENVILLE –Top-seeded Renville County West remained unbeaten on the year with a 44-6 win over fifth-seeded Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s on Saturday afternoon.

No stats were submitted for the game.

St. Mary’s finishes the season with a 4-6 record, while RCW next takes on Hancock for the section title Friday night.
