‘Grandparents Happy Hour Law’ won’t change much in NU

Oak Hills already hosts it on Fridays

NEW ULM — It appears Minnesota’s new “Grandparents Happy Hour” law effective Aug. 1, 2026 in nursing homes and assisted living facilities, won’t change things much in area nursing homes.

The new law allows assisted living facilities, and boarding care homes to serve alcohol to residents and guests during organized events without a liquor license.

Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm already has happy hour every Friday, said administrator Candas Schouvieller.

“Residents can have a drink of wine, beer or a mixed drink every Friday. I don’t think the new law will change anything here, from my understanding,” she said.

“We also have wine and dine, a fancy dinner with wine or beer every quarter (three months). Cinco de Mayo (May 5) is coming up. We plan to offer margaritas (tequila-based cocktails).”

Sleepy Eye Senior Living Administrator Nathan Pearson said the facility doesn’t currently have a “happy hour” residents could consume an alcoholic drink with their doctor’s approval.

“Families typically provide liquor to residents that want a drink if they have a doctor’s approval,” he said.

Woodstone Senior Living Director Brittany Bullock said she likes the new law.

“We aren’t serving alcohol regularly here yet, but we offer a small glass of wine at certain events like Mother’s Day,” she said. “I think it’s nice for residents to be able to share a drink with family members without having to leave their home, depending on medications may be on.”

Orchard Hill Assisted Living Director Art Keith said he plans to offer residents alcoholic beverages on occasions like the Minnesota Twins season opener and on Father’s Day.

The new law includes safeguards including requiring staff serving alcohol to be at least 18 years of age, ensuring facilities are responsible for preventing over-consumption and notify the Minnesota Department of Health of their intent to service alcoholic beverages.

Several days ago, the Minnesota House finally found something they almost entirely agree on, approving the bill by a vote of 129-1.

After the House vote, the bill cleared the Senate 56-10 and was signed into law earlier this week.

“Living in a nursing home shouldn’t mean giving up everyday freedoms. I just signed a bill allowing seniors living in nursing homes to consume alcohol — so that everyone can enjoy happy hour!” Governor Tim Walz posted on Facebook April 21.
