Elk River hits early, takes down Legion Gold 6-2

NEW ULM — Elk River collected half of their 10 hits in the game in a four-run second and used that to earn a 6-2 win over New Ulm Legion Gold Friday night in an Upper Midwest Classic game at Johnson Park.
Brett Groebner got the win for Post 112. He went six innings and allowed two runs on seven hits while striking out four.
Jaden Drill took the mound loss for New Ulm.
He went three innings and was charged with five runs. He allowed six hits and fanned three. Jace Schaefer allowed one run on four hits in the final four innings.
Drew Girtz and Kyler Mossengren each had two hits for Elk River.
Carter Lang had two hits for Gold with Evan Wiltscheck adding a triple.
Elk River plated those four runs in the second inning when Ryan Weatherly led off with a double off of Drill. He scored on a Grant Stoltman one-out single. A Logan Bunker RBI single made it 2-0 before Drew Girtz singled in the third run. A wild pitch made it 4-0.
A Stoltman sacrifice fly in the third made it a 5-0 Elk River lead.
Gold cut the lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the fifth when Maddox Mortensen scored on a Carter Lang single.
New Ulm made it 5-2 in the sixth when Evan Wiltscheck led off with a triple and trotted home on a Lucas Suess groundout.
Post 112 added an insurance run in the top of the seventh on a fielder’s choice.
Both teams will complete their pool play Saturday.
