Radio banquet honors 3 athletes

NEW ULM — KNUJ’s 60th annual Player of the Year Awards for basketball and wrestling took place on Tuesday night at the Best Western Plus, with three of the area’s top athletes taking home trophies.
Madison Mathiowetz of Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s, who was named the All-Journal Girls’ Basketball Player of the Year for the third consecutive season a week ago, earned her third consecutive KNUJ Player of the Year award also for girls’ basketball on Tuesday. Mathiowetz finished her illustrious career as the school’s all-time leader in points (3,762), rebounds (1,343), assists (498) and steals (458). She averaged 34.9 ppg this season and 11.5 rpg.
Mathiowetz was unable to attend the ceremony.
For wrestling, Drayden Morton of Sibley East was named the KNUJ Wrestler of the Year for the second year in a row. Morton finished his senior season with second-place Class A medal at the state wrestling individuals at 145 pounds. He was 48-1 with 26 falls and was also named the All-Journal Wrestler of the Year this season.
For boys’ basketball, Madelia’s Ja’Sean Glover earned the KNUJ Boys’ Basketball Player of the Year on Tuesday. Glover finished his senior year averaging 30.2 ppg and 13.8 rpg. He also finished his career as the Blackhawks’ all-time leading scorer (3,119 points) and rebounder (1,205 rebounds).
