Area roundup: Greyhounds ground GHEC/T/ML in playoffs
PREP SOFTBALL
CATHEDRAL 12, GHEC/T/ML 1 (5 INNINGS)
NEW ULM — No. 3-seeded New Ulm Cathedral made short work of 14th-seeded Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther on Tuesday, winning 11-1 at Harman Park in the first round of the Section 2A Softball Tournament.
The game ended in five innings due to the 10-run lead rule, which came into effect after an RBI double by Jayde Altermatt.
Altermatt got the pitching win in five innings, allowing three hits and no walks for one run while striking out seven. Five Greyhounds had two hits apiece in the win.
Ava Schmid led the way for the Greyhounds by going 2 for 3 with a homer and three runs scored, while Morgan Beranek was 2 for 3 with two doubles and an RBI. Leah Wilson was 2 for 4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored, while Altermatt was 2 for 4 with her double and two RBIs and Thea Paszkiewicz was 2 for 4 with a double. Brynn Wilfahrt was also 1 for 3 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored for Cathedral.
Cathedral hosts Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey at 5 p.m. Thursday in the second round. Thursday begins double-elimination play, meaning the losing team will drop into an elimination bracket and play at 10 a.m. Saturday at Caswell Park in North Mankato. The winner of Thursday’s game will play at 10 a.m. at Caswell Park in the winners bracket quarterfinals on Field 2.

MOUNTAIN LAKE — Sixth-seeded Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey defeated 11th-seeded Madelia 13-4 in a Section 2A Softball Tournament game on Tuesday.
Emily Jacobs took the loss for the Blackhawks, striking out four and allowing seven earned runs on 10 hits in six innings. At the plate, Makayla Lehman was 2 for 4 with a run scored, while Lauryn Grev had a grand slam.
Madelia ends its season with a 5-18 record.
JWP 11, SPRINGFIELD 1 (5 INNINGS)
JANESVILLE — Eighth-seeded Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton topped ninth-seeded Springfield 11-1 in five innings in a Section 2A Softball Tournament game on Tuesday.
Regan Beadell took the loss for Springfield, striking out three and allowing 11 runs on 14 hits. At the plate, Jada Reese, Makay Winkelmann and Olivia Sprenger each had a hit.
Springfield ends its season with a 10-12 record.
PREP BASEBALL
SPRINGFIELD 8, RRC/WWG 1
LAMBERTON — Springfield defeated Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove 8-1 in a nonconference baseball game on Tuesday.
Eli Heglund earned the win for Springfield, striking out one and allowing one hit in one inning. At the plate, Madden Lendt was 3 for 5 with a triple, an RBI and three runs scored, while Aiden Moriarty had a home run with two RBIs.
Second-seeded Springfield (17-4) hosts 15th-seeded Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda on Thursday in the first round of the Section 2A Baseball Tournament.
MANKATO EAST 3, NEW ULM 1
MANKATO — Mankato East downed New Ulm 3-1 in a nonconference baseball game on Tuesday.
Mitchell Hopp took the loss for New Ulm, striking out two and allowing three runs on two hits in 4 2/3 innings. At the plate, Candon Briggs had a hit and an RBI.
New Ulm plays at Albert Lea on Thursday.

EAGLES TAKE 7TH AT BSC CHAMPIONSHIPS
NEW ULM — New Ulm placed seventh out of eight teams on both the boys and girls side of the Big South Conference Track and Field Championships on Tuesday.
The 4×200 relay team of Hunter Heil, Michael Hames, Jamison Portner and George Gag placed first on the boys side.

SEU WINS AT DACOTAH RIDGE
MORTON — Sleepy Eye United won both sides of a prep golf meet at Dacotah Ridge Golf Course on Tuesday.
SEU led the boys with a 333, followed by New Ulm Cathedral (374), Cedar Mountain (380) and Springfield (389). Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart was incomplete.
The SEU girls won with a 394, followed by Springfield (405), Cedar Mountain (482) and Cathedral (497).
Individually for the boys, SEU’s Nolan Kucera placed first (77), followed by Cedar Mountain’s Carson Schiller (81), SEU”s Blaine Arneson (83) and Anders Coulson (85), and Cathedral’s Carter Wilson and Carsten Haala (86). Dylan Simonson led Springfield by placing eighth (90).
Individually for the girls, SEU’s Sam Price placed first (81), followed by Springfield’s Mavri Winkelmann (81), SEU’s Kiara Murphy (97), Springfield’s Ava Lipetzky (101) and Springfield’s Annie Kuehn (102). Cedar Mountain’s Jaylyn Welter placed eighth (109) and Cathedral’s Emma Hoffmann and Peyton Weisbrich tied for 11th (116).

NEW ULM BOYS
NEW ULM GIRLS 207, MVL 227
BUFFALO LAKE — New Ulm won a nonconference golf matchup with Minnesota Valley Lutheran on Monday at Oakdale Golf Club, with the Eagles boys winning 147-187 and the girls winning 207-222.
New Ulm’s Colton Anderson was the boys medalist with a 1-under-par 35, while teammate Mason Buegler was second with a 36 and teammate Brayden Wendinger shot a 37 for third. New Ulm’s Ethan Schmidt and Brandt Munson shot 39s to tie for fourth, while MVL’s Owen Birkholz carded a 40 for sixth.
New Ulm’s Maddy Wellmann was the girls medalist with a 48, while teammate Lilly Kral shot a 52 for second and teammate Lydia Osborne shot a 53 for third. MVL’s Kara Hinrichsen shot a 54 to tie with New Ulm’s Brogan Thordson for fourth, while MVL’s Eden Grubbs shot a 55 for sixth.
