Mustangs pull away from MVL

NEW ULM — Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart had four players score in double figures as the Mustangs defeated Minnesota Valley Lutheran 84-67 on Thursday in Tomahawk Conference boys’ basketball action.
Connor McColley had 24 points with 10 rebounds, seven assists, two steals and one block. Chase Hubin scoerd 21 points, Ashten Bergstrom added 19 points and Gavin Bersma chipped in wih 12 points and 14 rebounds.
Cole Thompson led the Chargers with 19 points, five rebounds and six steals. Ben Pearson scored 12 points and he had five rebounds, five assists and two steals.
MVL utilized a full-court press which worked well during the first half. There were two ties and three lead changes. Midway through the first half, MVL started to pull away from BLHS. The result was a 46-39 advantage for the Chargers at halftime.
The Mustangs opened the second half with a 7-0 run. Bergstrom and Saxton Melberg scored baskets and Hubin’s 3-pointer tied it at 46-46.
Later, Ty Sexton was fouled and he dropped in the free throw to regain MVL’s lead. McColley’s 3 tied it again. Bergstrom’s free throw regained BLHS’s lead at 50-49. McColley hit a 3 and Hubin’s basket gave the Mustangs a small cushion of 53-49.
MVL hit a scoring drought late in the second half. That resulted in BLHS closing out the game with a 9-0 run.
The Mustangs outrebounded MVL 42-36. They were 29-of-51 for 56% from the field. From 3-point range, the Mustangs were 9-of-13 for 59% and from the free throw line. BLHS had 16 turnovers while the Chargers had 11 turnovers.
MVL was 26-of-80 for 32%, 9-of-27 for 33% from 3 point range and 6-of-13 for 46% shooting free throws.
BLHS (6-5, 6-2) will host New Ulm Cathedral (6-6, 4-3) on Tuesday.
MVL (2-10, 2-6) will play at Cedar Mountain (5-5, 4-3) on Tuesday.
