NEW ULM — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s defeated New Ulm Cathedral 88-22 on Monday in Tomahawk Conference girls’ basketball action.
Reagan Severson led all scorers with 23 points. Madison Mathiowetz had 22 points and Natalie Fischer added 11 points for the Knights.
Shay Wilfahrt led the Greyhounds with 8 points while Abby Schugel scored 5 points.
Cathedral’s Achilles heel was a combination of turnovers and fouls. St. Mary’s used a swarming defense, which created havoc for the Greyhounds. St. Mary’s made it clear that if you make a mistake, it will take advantage of it and turn it into points.
The Knights scored 53 points in the first half alone while Cathedral managed 12 points. St. Mary’s outscored Cathedral 35-10 in the second half.
Late in the first half, Morgan Mathiowetz gained possession of the ball and she passed it to Madison Mathiowetz, who scored on a fast-break layup. Cathedral’s Maddie Gillis answered with a 3-point shot to close out the first half.
St. Mary’s continued with its tough defense throughout the second half. The Knights would get the ball, either on a rebound or a turnover, and bring it up the court for a score.
St. Mary’s (8-1, 4-0) will host Minnesota Valley Lutheran (3-1, 2-0) on Friday.
Cathedral (0-5, 0-4) will play at Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop (2-3, 1-2) on Thursday.
