NUA competes at Don Hall Invite over weekend

GLENCOE — New Ulm Area competed at the Don Hall Invite at Glencoe-Silver Lake High School on Saturday, with Jaden Drill leading the Eagles with a second-place finish at heavyweight.

Drill earned a pair of pins over Dalton Hall of Zumbrota-Mazeppa and Cameron Scholten of Jackson County Central before falling in the championship match to Ace Meyer of Kimball Area 10-8 in overtime.

Also for NUA, Dylen Carreon finished fourth at 220 with two byes and two decisions, while Winsten Nienhaus took third at 132 by going 3-1. Logan Lee also finished third for NUA at 126 with a bye, a decision loss and three wins by decision.

Springfield competes at Flandreau, SD meet

FLANDREAU, S.D. — The Springfield wrestling team competed at a meet in South Dakota on Saturday, with Shane Clemon finishing first at heavyweight to lead the way.

Clemon went 2-0 on the day to finish first at heavyweight, while teammates Sam Rummel (220), Mitchell Streich (195) and Ashtin Johnson (170) all finished third in their weight classes by each going 3-1. Wyatt Schmidt (120) went 3-2 to finish fourth at his class.

Girls’ Basketball

New Ulm 73, Pipestone 49

NEW ULM — New Ulm opened its season on Saturday with a 73-49 win over Pipestone Area in girls’ basketball action at New Ulm High School.

Brooklyn Lewis led the Eagles with 19 points and five rebounds, while Morgan Hulke had 15 points and six rebounds. Also for New Ulm, Ramsey Hopp had 14 points and six rebounds, while Kirsten Dennis had 14 points.

New Ulm is at Marshall on Tuesday.

Mt. Iron-Buhl 90, St. Mary’s 64

HOPKINS — Mountain Iron-Buhl hits 16 3-pointers against Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s to pull away with a 90-64 win on Saturday in girls’ basketball action at the Breakdown Tip-Off Classic.

St. Mary’s was led by Madison Mathiowetz’s 37 points, six rebounds and two assists, while Natalie Fischer added 10 points and Allie Labat had 7 points and five rebounds.

The Knights (4-1) host Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop on Tuesday.
