CHASKA — Andy Schmidt’s one-out RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning on Saturday night gave the Milroy Yankees just what they needed.
Despite leaving 15 runners on base up to that extra inning, the single pushed Milroy past the New Ulm Brewers 4-3 in the Class C State Amateur Baseball Tournament at Athletic Park.
In the bottom of the ninth, Milroy got Branden Flock on first after an error with two down. A single by Isaac Schmitt to left then was followed up with a throw from Cole Ranweiler to home for the tag and final out of the inning, leading to extra innings.
After a scoreless top of the 10th, the bottom of the 10th inning started with a bunt single by Jackson Hughes. Jake Tauer then sacrifice bunted Hughes to second before Andy Schmidt ended the game with his single.
The Yankees outhit the Brewers 15-4.
Mitch Bockenstedt got the start on the mound for the Brewers, pitching four innings and allowing three earned runs on eight hits. He struck out three and allowed no walks. Stade pitched in relief for New Ulm, giving up seven hits and two walks for one earned run. He struck out four.
The Yankees sent Josh Kingery, an Atwater draftee, to the mound to start. Kingery finished the game with 14 strikeouts and one earned run allowed on four hits and a walk.
The Brewers got going right away in the top of the first inning with a leadoff double by Judd Davis. Davis was sacrifice bunted to third by J.T. Hoffmann before Hunter Ranweiler grounded out, scoring Davis from third for a 1-0 New Ulm lead.
Milroy answered in the bottom of the inning, however, getting back-to-back singles by Jake Tauer and Andy Schmidt to lead off. Bockenstedt then got a swinging strikeout and forced a lineout to Cole Ranweiler in left.
After a New Ulm error filled the bases, Derek Rasmussen’s two-out RBI single knotted things up at 1-1. A 6-3 groundout ended the Milroy threat.
After a quiet second inning, New Ulm took a 2-1 lead in the third after Judd Davis, who reached earlier on an error, scored on a throwing error from second to first in attempts to get an inning-ending double play.
In the fifth, a single by Davis put Josh Seidl on third. Seidl reached earlier on a leadoff walk and was sac bunted to second by Colten Schaefer. A Milroy throwing error with two outs allowed Hunter Ranweiler to reach first and Seidl to score for a 3-1 New Ulm lead.
The Yankees tied it in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run double by Aaron Mathiowetz with no outs. Matt Bauer moved to third on the double after reaching on a single right before Mathiowetz’s double. That double ended Bockenstedt’s night as Stade came in to pitch in relief.
Davis led New Ulm at the plate, going 2 for 5 with a pair of runs scored.
Milroy was led by David Schmidt at the plate, who was 3 for 4 with a run scored. Andy Schmidt, Hughes, Schmitt, Bauer and Tauer each had two hits for Milroy, who advanced in the tournament to Sunday (Sept. 5) with the win.
