Mankato West drops Junior Legion

NEW ULM — Mankato West scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning to turn a 1-0 lead into a 5-0 cushion and went on to down the New Ulm Junior Legion 5-2 Thursday night in the Junior Upper Midwest Classic.

Braeden Smook got the win for West, going 6 2/3 innings and fanning seven. He allowed four hits.

The two runs he allowed in the bottom of the seventh inning to New Ulm were aided by three errors.

Carter Haala took the loss for the Junior Legion. He went 5 1/3 innings and allowed five runs on four hits while fanning three.

West broke open a scoreless game in the top of the fourth inning when Zach Kammerer walked and took second on a wild pitch. He went to third on a wild pitch and scored when Smook helped his own cause with an RBI single.

The Junior Legion, who plays Hastings at 2 p.m. and then Osseo at 7 p.m. Friday at Johnson Park, had only two runners get as far as second base through five innings.

West tallied four runs in the sixth using two hits and three New Ulm errors to move out to a 5-0 lead.
