Area roundup: Springfield’s Leonard, Helget combine to no-hit Minneota

MINNEOTA — Springfield’s Mason Leonard and Tori Helget combined for a no-hitter as the Tigers defeated Minneota in a nonconference baseball game on Monday.
Leonard struck out four and walked four in five innings and Helget struck out two. The Tigers only managed one hit in the game, that coming from Jason Nachreiner. He also scored Springfield’s lone run. Helget had four stolen bases in the game and he also scored a run.
Nicollet 15, Madelia 14
MADELIA — Nicollet outlasted Madelia in a Valley Conference baseball game on Monday.
Elijah McCabe was 3 for 5 for Madelia with three runs scored and Dylan Grev scored three runs and had two hits. Eric Anderson was 2 for 4 with two runs scored and two RBIs.
St. Mary’s 11, BLHS 1, 5 innings
SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s downed Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart 11-1 in five innings of Tomahawk Conference baseball on Monday.
The Knights saw Carson Domeier get the win in four innings, allowing one run on four walks and a hit while fanning four. Domeier also went 3 for 3 at the playe with a double and an RBI, while Spencer Hoffman was 2 for 3 with a homer and three RBIs and Jacob Stevens was 2 for 2.
St. Mary’s hosts Martin Luther on Thursday night.
BLHS 4, Wabasso 0
SLEEPY EYE — Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart defeated Wabasso 4-0 on Monday in Tomahawk Conference baseball action in Sleepy Eye.
Wabasso was led by Colby Wall and Adryen Tietx, who each had a single. Matthew Evink took the loss, giving up two runs on a hit and two walks.
BLHS was led by Nicholas Taylor, who had two singles and a double, while Caleb Weispfenning had two hits. Braden McColley got the complete-game win, giving up two hits and two walks for no runs while fanning four.
All four BLHS runs scored in the first inning.
Prep Softball
MVL 12, GHEC/T/ML
GRANADA — Minnesota Valley Lutheran picked up its third win of the season on Monday by downing Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther 12-3 in nonconference softball action.
Grace Bauer and Haley Ditch led MVL with three hits apiece, with Ditch adding two RBIs. Becca Kuck also had two hits and two RBIs and got the complete-game win, giving up three hits and seven walks for two earned runs while fanning seven.
MVL hosts Nicollet on Tuesday.

Wabasso boys 202, MVL 218, GFW 220
MVL girls 224, Wabasso 278, GFW Inc.
FAIRFAX — Wabasso won a Tomahawk Conference boys’ golf triangular on Monday, defeating Minnesota Valley Lutheran and Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop.
Ben Pearson shot a 49 for MVL, Logan Martin shot a 44 for GFW and Ashton Thein shot a 47 for Wabasso.
On the girls’ side, MVL came away with the victory. Nadine Clobes shot a 49 to lead the Chargers. Jocelyn Jenniges shot a 62 and GFW’s Marti Jacobson shot a 64.
New Ulm boys finish 7th at Dacotah Ridge
MORTON — The New Ulm boys’ golf team finished seventh on Monday at a Big South Conference tournament at Dacotah Ridge.
BEA won the tourney with a 324, while New Ulm’s score of 360 led to a seventh-place finish out of 12 teams.
Kyle Esser led New Ulm with an 85, good enough to tie him for 14th overall. Eagles freshman Will Fossen followed Esser with a 90.

Springfield 14, Sleepy Eye 0
SLEEPY EYE — The Springfield Tigers shut out the Sleepy Eye Indians 14-0 on Sunday in a Tomahawk East League amateur baseball opener.
The Tigers were led by Mason Rummel, who was 4 for 5 with three RBIs and a homer, while Jacob Poehler, Carter Erickson, Ryan Sturm and Mitchell Leonard all had two hits apiece. Leonard and Poehler also had a homer, while Leonard drove in five runs.
Henry Scheitel got the win on the mound in six innings of work, giving up three hits and two walks while striking out three.
The Indians got one hit each from Luke Mielke, Matt Sellner and Parker Neid. Jake Mielke took the loss on the mound in five innings, giving up 11 hits and two walks for 11 earned runs while fanning three.
Essig 4, Searles 2
SEARLES — Essig defeated Searles in a Tomahawk East League amateur baseball game on Sunday.
Kasey Kuck went 2 for 6 with an RBI for the Grizzlies. Jake Stadick and Erich Prokosch each had a hit for Essig.
Eric Scheibel earned the win for Essig. He went 5 2/3, allowed three hits. Casey Lux took the loss. He allowed four runs in four innings on two hits.
